This is the country I live in
Feb. 17th, 2012 02:27 pmNext month the U.S. Supreme Court will hear argument about the obscene government overreach that is the individual mandate in President Obama’s health care law. Yet physical intrusion by government into the vagina of a pregnant woman is so urgently needed that the woman herself should be forced to pay for the privilege.

Synchronized swimming to FF themes
Nov. 15th, 2011 12:58 pmThis might be old meme to some of you, but I just saw it:
Synchronized Swimming Final Fantasy
During the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, the United States synchronized swimming duet of Alison Bartosik and Anna Kozlova won the bronze medal using two of Nobuo Uematsu's pieces from Final Fantasy VIII in the second half of their routine.
Of all the weird stuff I've seen associated with FF... this is one of the weirdest. It's just so out of context. But it's also very Final Fantasy, in its way, because of the out-of-contextedness. (An octopus at an opera? What?)
(No Esther Williams jokes, please. I tried synchronized swimming in college, and it is fucking hard.)

Something new every day
Nov. 10th, 2011 11:28 amBiscuit had to go to the vet yesterday for an annual checkup and a distemper booster shot. While we were there, the vet admired her stripes (which he probably does for every cat). We've always said that she is a brown/black tabby with bleach spots, because she has slightly lighter tabby patches throughout her coat - as if someone had spattered her with a weak solution of bleach. The vet said that the lighter patches mean that she is actually a calico.
You learn something new every day!
And, because Biscuit is way more popular than I am, here is a picture of her in her Trucker Pose.

Popular baby names
Nov. 1st, 2011 03:50 pmGoodbye, Harry and Bella: Gatsby's the New Character Name in Town
Zuzu -- Today's parents grew up watching It's A Wonderful Life on television every Christmas, and the nickname of the little girl who tells dad Jimmy Stewart that every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings, is finding new favor along with other double names such as Coco and Lulu.
Also, it's Prince Zuko's nickname! Naming your daughter "Azula" might be a recipe for megalomania, though.

Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 2
Oct. 25th, 2011 04:01 pmHusband and I watched the second episode of The Walking Dead last night. As much as I want to watch it live, there are so many damn commercials that DVR'ing it is better.

Oct. 21st, 2011 11:09 amJust got an email from one of our sales reps:
"I am excited to send you the information on our new line of Core Shell columns: AERIS. Aeris will provide ultra-high resolution and increased peak capacity to bioseparations on ANY system."
...Does it also sell flowers and pray for Holy?
(I am having a very hard time NOT responding to the email with that statement.)

Doujinshi title?
Oct. 17th, 2011 10:19 pmI'm asking for a very little help from anyone on my flist who reads/speaks Japanese better than I do. I am about to list a pile of doujinshi on eBay, and one of them has a title in Japanese. Obviously, I have no idea what it says. It would be really nice to list this book with a title. If anyone out there can tell me what the title of this book is, I'd be tremendously grateful.

Ohmygod now I want to see all of our fearless heroes go trick-or-treating. It would be epic.

Life imitates art
Sep. 16th, 2011 09:09 amScientists have found Tatooine!
The great part is that even though the planet has an official name, no one is ever, ever going to use it.

Nerdery news
Sep. 13th, 2011 10:18 amFinally, after several years and three different ports, I finished the main storyline of FFIV. FINALLY!
I'd initially bought the GBA port when I bought my DS, and I played it on and off until the DS remake came out. At that time, I sold my GBA port version (because hey, why hang onto it when there's a new one available) and took up the DS version instead. Turns out that 1. the DS version is a lot harder than the original and 2. Augments are not good for someone indecisive like me, who can't decide who to give which Augment to or when to equip it. It also means that when characters leave the party and drop more Augments, I don't get them. I kept letting my ass kicked by those damnable Dark Sages, and I put the game down in frustration.
Then the PSP port came out, so the third time is the charm. It's also nice that the PSP has a big screen, which makes it easier for someone like me. My eyes aren't the greatest to begin with, and I'm getting older, which makes the little DS screen tough to deal with sometimes. Plus the FMVs were shiny! (But why none in the ending? Boo!) The difficulty in the PSP version is the same as the GBA port, so this time I got the whole way through the game. Hooray for cute married couples. <3
(In that vein, I read on the FF wiki that Ceodore's age had to be retconned such that Rosa wouldn't be pregnant when they got married. LOL. I knew she was up to something when she visits Cecil in his room at the beginning of the game.)

I want you all to know that there may be a race car in our garage in the near future.
When my husband was in college, he was part of a Formula SAE team that built a motorcycle engine-based race car. The team eventually took the car to Michigan and entered it into the Formula SAE competition that year, and they placed ninth IIRC, which isn't too shabby. One of the team members was a guy named Jerry, and he and my husband reconnected through (where else) Facebook. Jerry still lives locally, and he had heard that some old race cars from our university were going to be up for grabs and would my husband be interested in fixing one of them up.
Of course husband fell all over himself answering HELL YES and asked me whether that unused corner of our garage behind the Honda S2000 mightn't be a good spot for a little race car to live. I rolled my eyes, said yes, and now he and Jerry are going to meet for lunch and discuss how to work this out. It would be pretty sweet if the race car they brought home was the car they'd built together in college.
So, race car in my garage. Awesome.

Hurricane!
Aug. 27th, 2011 09:09 pmIt's raining like a sumbitch out there. I hope that we don't lose power and that our sump pump is up to the task.
For proper hurricane preparedness, we have water, flashlights, and wine.
In accordance with the NJ governor's request for voluntary evacuations, I evacuated three monarch butterfly caterpillars from my garden so that they are not blown to kingdom come overnight. They are in a nice little netted bug house that was supposed to be for preying mantises.
Other than that, I have a kitty and a PSP, so all's right with the world. Except no ice cream. :(
