Because I am a giant dork, I want to go to Char Steakhouse. (look! Their little logo even looks like the Fire Nation crest!) They just opened an outdoor area they call the Fire Lounge, and I would love to visit the Fire Lounge in Fire Nation cosplay. Except it is a fancy pants place and no one would get the joke but me. :( And also I don't have any Fire Nation cosplay.

It's a real shame that my husband is not going to be away on any weekends, because a stitch-n-bitch at my place for a weekend would be totes fun.

Cosplay goes mainstream on CNN. There's photo of a black mage on the main page.

Why is it that so many Sailor Moon cosplayers (specifically Usagi/Serena cosplayers) seem to have an undue amount of icons with their own face in 'em, usually photoshopped to look wistful/dreamy/whatever? Is there something about Usagi that attracts the narcissist, or are these folks (consciously or not) attempting to emulate the storied Madame Kou? From my (limited) memory of Sailor Moon, Usagi isn't the brightest bulb on the string, but I don't know whether the character is considered to have an unduly high opinion of herself.

Probably has more to do with the whole "star of the show" type deal you get in shoujo, but what's often conveniently forgotten is that the the chickie with the Super Duper Attack can't do jack shit without her supporting cast to beat up the bad guy to start.

I haven't blabbed about my weekend in weeks! I'm sure you all missed it a LOT.

Busy weekend, but in a good way. Friday night we went out for a very swank dinner at 3 West with one of my husband's friends from the R&A. They're visiting the USGA this week, and husband is good friends with the technical director. I tried merguez for the first time, and we had a lovely bottle of cabernet to go along with dinner, and dessert was banana and peanut butter spring rolls with vanilla ice cream. Mmmtasty.

Saturday was spent on domestic duties such as cleaning the floor and bathroom and making polenta and spezzatino for dinner (alternately titled "How Arafel Discovered the Joys of Instant Polenta.") Normally to make polenta, you boil cornmeal in water while stirring until it softens and cooks, and it takes 30 to 40 minutes. Instant polenta - dump it in and it's done. w00t! Husband spent the day setting up our new home theatre system, and we tried it out on Serenity, which [ profile] fadingembers gave me for Christmas.

Sunday was Team Haxx0r Cosplay Day. [ profile] jaina came over about noonish, and we spent the day on our knees in the kitchen (not that way, you dirty pervs!) drawing lines on black fabric. I have to say that things went VERY well, and we had plenty of time to watch Bleach 64 before we moved on to basting pleats in front of the Steelers/Broncos football game. Lookin' good for Katsucon, yes. Afterwards, I did some work on my own cosplay while dropping in and out of watching the Panthers/Seahawks game. We had the Traditional Football Meal of bratwurst on a bun with sauerkraut accompanied by beer. Neither game was terribly exciting, IMO - both the Broncos and the Panthers committed four turnovers, and you can't do that shit esp. in the playoffs and expect to win.

Now, back to work. I have done nothing productive for work all morning. Oh, and GIP too.

Whoa nelly

Here's a couple for the OMGWTF files, for otaku who don't know where to draw the line.

A girl who thinks she's Ganondorf's wife. Her makeup is beyond scary.

Two courtesy of [ profile] sailormac:

1. A girl who thinks she is married to Sephiroth on the Astral Plane here, from [ profile] rabidfanssuck. The tee-hee'ing over their wedding night had me holding my head.

2. A girl who was married to Ryou Bakura here. They also had children.

What is the deal here? And moreover, why are there comments from friends affirming how beautiful their pseudorelationships are? Guys, I know that we all have our fangirl moments, but if any of you started doing this, I'd tell you right to your face that you need some help instead of saying how happy I was for you.

I finally get up enough momentum to work on the hakama a bit, and then I find out I made the wrong size backboard. Should have made the small, made the medium. At least I can cut down the stiffener.

After all that damned handsewing, too. :P

Good news is we're going to be home tomorrow night, so I can fix it and download Bleach 45. :D

It's gonna be a quiet weekend here on LJ, because all you nice ppl are off to Otakon! As much as it feels weird not to be going after three years of attendance, it worked out for the best. Both my brother-in-law and mother-in-law are celebrating birthdays this weekend, and jeez oh man would that have been a mess.

Looking forward to con stories!

This might not look like much... but trust me, this took FOREVER.

Hakama are sent straight from hell. [ profile] andmydog was right. I'm going to have to gather my resolve before I attempt the pleats.

I also made the shinigami kimono, but that wasn't nearly as onerous a task.

So far, in the Shinigami Cosplay Saga, it ain't the geometry that's the problem with the hakama. It's kneeling on the kitchen floor with the chalk, measuring segments over and over to make sure it all lines up.

My knees are killing me.

Thank god the kimono pattern is normal, because otherwise I'd be crying.

Okay. I want to figure out what kind of fabric would be best for making hakama, but there are so many choices. I want a medium-weight fabric that won't make me die of the heat, isn't terribly expensive, and has a nice drape. My options so far are:

  • Broadcloth

Inexpensive, but might be too thin

  • Duck

Not sure if this might be too heavy

  • Linen/linen blend

    Attractive option, but potentially expensive

    Any suggestions or thoughts?
