RACE CAR

I want you all to know that there may be a race car in our garage in the near future.

When my husband was in college, he was part of a Formula SAE team that built a motorcycle engine-based race car. The team eventually took the car to Michigan and entered it into the Formula SAE competition that year, and they placed ninth IIRC, which isn't too shabby. One of the team members was a guy named Jerry, and he and my husband reconnected through (where else) Facebook. Jerry still lives locally, and he had heard that some old race cars from our university were going to be up for grabs and would my husband be interested in fixing one of them up.

Of course husband fell all over himself answering HELL YES and asked me whether that unused corner of our garage behind the Honda S2000 mightn't be a good spot for a little race car to live. I rolled my eyes, said yes, and now he and Jerry are going to meet for lunch and discuss how to work this out. It would be pretty sweet if the race car they brought home was the car they'd built together in college.

So, race car in my garage. Awesome.

Two weeks ago, I posted about how I was sorry my passport had expired and we couldn't make a last-minute trip to the Grand Prix du Canada.

Then we watched the GP on television, and we saw that it was rainy and cold, and the weather got so bad that the race was red-flagged for two hours. Between the cold weather all weekend and the rain on raceday, I would have been absolutely ripshit if I'd been there. What was supposed to be a treat would have turned into a very unpleasant weekend, and thanks to US Customs, I feel like I dodged a bullet.

So, thanks, bureaucracy, for saving my butt!

This brings a little bit of a tear to my eye.

(to put this in context, no other woman has ever come close to winning a closed-circuit race before.)

YOU GO, GIRL!

Race is over and done with. I am looking forward to going home, where I can understand what people are saying to me.

Nice to see an American driver back in F1. Scott Speed made his debut as Red Bull's third driver this weekend in Montreal, and he did a respectable job. Not the best out there, but not the worst; ended second practice early with a spin. One hopes to see him in a couple races in a few years.

(He's not related to Lake Speed, for those of you who followed NASCAR in the late eighties.)
