Synchronized swimming to FF themes

This might be old meme to some of you, but I just saw it:

Synchronized Swimming Final Fantasy

During the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, the United States synchronized swimming duet of Alison Bartosik and Anna Kozlova won the bronze medal using two of Nobuo Uematsu's pieces from Final Fantasy VIII in the second half of their routine.

Of all the weird stuff I've seen associated with FF... this is one of the weirdest. It's just so out of context. But it's also very Final Fantasy, in its way, because of the out-of-contextedness. (An octopus at an opera? What?)

(No Esther Williams jokes, please. I tried synchronized swimming in college, and it is fucking hard.)

Old meme or not, that's the first time I've seen it. And yes, that is...different. My deep and abiding question, though, is...why were they not wearing suits that looked like Edea's dress or something? Sadface.

I have honestly always wondered why more Uematsu music doesn't make it into things like gymnastics, synchronized swimming, and figure skating. It's ridiculously evocative, so you'd think it would lend itself to programs of that nature.

Plus, there is always that potential for someone to wear an octopus skating dress.
