Would a suitable punishment be to keep the lamp heated at all times, so anyone who touches it end up with burned fingers ? ;)

or better yet, stick a piece of tape on it that says "put me back to Arafel's bench once you're finished using me or !". Lab mates need to be reminded of things like that all the time.

I'm often tempted to fill a bottle with water, label it "whupass," and brandish it (and threaten to open it) when people take my stuff. Breaking people's fingers would likely be more effective though...

Or perhaps you could get some of those remote control collars--the ones that give off electrical shocks, then remove the circuitry and put in lamp instead. Then when Arafel goes looking for missing lamp (or other equipment), she can turn on remote, and see who lets out a yelp when the touch lamp/equipment.
