Knowing the people in my lab and their total disinclination towards respect of other people's possessions, bodily harm and threats are about the only effective tactic. We have one particularly irritating student who seems to have made it his mission to screw up everything he can around the lab and make work for everyone else. I'm going to kill him soon.

But I'm preaching to the choir here. :)

If bodily harm works, go for it. There are a frustrating few who never get it though... they never see the mess and they never realize how they inconvenience others. It's not arrogance, it's stupidity.
