...that started out with a big laugh from our bossman, of all people. We were all at Social having beers, and he decided to ask the group what we thought of his Christmas situation. Both his sons are coming home for the holiday and bringing their lady friends, and he's got three rooms and four people. The upshot is that he doesn't know whether he's behind the times to not allow his sons to sleep in the same room as their lady friends (Rob and I shook our heads "no," Melanie said "well..." to which the two of us replied, "your parents are hippies, they don't count." Her parents are hippies, too.) So bossman was ruminating about why his wife is really the one with the problem; he said that his kids are 30 and 27 y/o and at this point in their lives... well... they have experience. To which I said that "well if you had daughters, it would be a WHOLE different story."

He started to laugh and said "yeah - boys in the barn, girls in the attic, and me on the stairs..." "With a shotgun?" I suggested helpfully. Of course the group is on the floor and now we all have this great mental image of bossman in overalls with a shotgun on the stairs...

I don't know why we always end up talking about sex in this group. Last week it was whether you'd ever caught your parents.
what else...

went to lab on Saturday and scanned another dj
made tortellini soup for dinner

put up tree
baked gingersnaps and some coconut/chocolote/almond bars
made roast leg of lamb for dinner (with gravy!)
decorated tree
got sniped on eBay (well the item wasn't more than $20 worth of "I want it" anyway)
watched the Giants lose
made a new mix CD
started getting sick, just in time for the holidays. :P

went to lab on Saturday and scanned another dj <== It was a productive day at the lab indeed. :)

Hmm.. I came down with something last week myself. I guess I decided to get sick for the holidays early this year. Rats. You get the X-mas flu, and I don't! =P

*narrows eyes at Hideto* You rat, you gave me this cold! Last time it was FC who gave me her cold over IM, and this time it's you! :P

Hope you're feeling better. :)

Indeed ! ;) LOL !

it'a always nice when you can have a few laughs with the lab group and the advisor joins in on the good atmosphere, no matter what the topic is. It certainly makes lab life more livable.

I hope you'll feel better soon !

Mostly it's at Social when the bossman comes to hang out. He always gets very pleased when we're all laughing - though once in a while we're laughing because we were discussing something rude and had to stop abruptly.

So far, so good. The allergy medication is working. *crosses fingers*

hope your exam goes well tomorrow!

Heh heh, that's the good thing with slightly socially inept bossmen, they don't notice when ppl laugh b/c they suddenly feel embarassed. :) You should have seen my first bossman, he was actually pretty funny that way, but a nice person too. Not as bad as I made him out in the story.

Hey, that's good ! Hopefully you'll avoid the cold. Did you ever try the herbal medicine everyone claims helps against cold, equinacia ? I've never tried it b/c I think I may be allergic to the herb itself.

Thanks ! I think it went ok. Some questions were badly formulated and that's bad for a multiple choice exam where the question has to be precise and clear, and some questions I just had to choose "C" on, but mostly it went fine. :)

Ha ha! Well I hope that the "when in doubt, pick C" rule gave you a few good guesses. :)

No, I haven't tried echinacea. It's supposed to be pretty good for colds but it might not have the same effect for allergies, which aren't caused by a virus like a cold is. It seems that the current problem is most likely related to the warm weather and therefore unseasonable pollen we've been having recently.

Time heals all wounds and images of bossmen. :) It sounded like you had a good relationship with him anyway, if you had lunch and interesting chat all the time.

no that was Bossman Bo... the other bossman was a bit less nice and I never had lunch with him.

I didn't realize you were feeling bad b/c of allergy, I thought you were taking the allergy medicine for the cold symptoms.

Yeah, allergies. :P

I was thinking of Bossman Bo. You never really told me about the other one.

nice to have allergies in the middle of December, isn't it ;P at least it's weird.

There isn't much to tell about the other bossman b/c he wasn't very social and mostly kept away from the lab. He didn't have time to help us much and mostly gave his input when we had come to the writing phase. Let's just say that he wasn't the ideal advisor for inexperienced students but he got things done, that's for sure. His story is a bit like the German lab I told you about, first lauded and given a lot of money and then losing political support. Kind of a sad story really...

One of these days I'm just going to show up on your doorstep and make you cook for me! lol

The Giants have been rather a disappointment this year. Not sure why either. The Saints are doing better than they have historically, but not as good as last year. :(

Sorry to hear you're getting sick...bleah. Hopefully it will pass before vacation is underway.

>I don't know why we always end up talking about sex in this group.

With the previous generation of my lab, we often talked about sex... lots of fun conversations. (I'm not very fond of the current batch). It wasn't quite so fun when the boss was around though. My advisor was a wild child, and she has shared some things that are ... well, after you hear them, you feel like you've just walked on in your parents (not that I know what that feels like exactly, but...). She did a lot of drugs, hung out with rockers after concerts (Tom Petty and his band, for example), and might be the only person that I know who's tried cocaine. Anyway, she doesn't do any of this anymore, of course, but she's more than happy to share the story of how she lost her virginity in polite company. (Noooo!)

New mix CD, eh? I hope to get one of these CD burners going someday...

Mmmm...gingersnaps.

@_X (is imagining hearing her advisor sharing his personal life with them; runs away screaming) Oh man. Your adv does sound like a wild child. Good gravy.

I have the fortunate happenstance of two fast burners in the lab for mixes. It's much cheaper than having my own. :)

Hehehe...yeah, it's pretty bad. When I first met her, she was immediately very open and honest about everything, and I thought that was pretty cool. Now, I just wish she'd act like a professor and stop telling me about all those trips to the doctor or the couples therapy she and her on-off fiance are going through. Zoiks.

And speaking of, I am greatly enjoying the Tori. :) Right now I am absolutely kicking myself for not getting my hands on To Venus and Back sooner. (I've been absorbing that one first...still haven't had a chance to give the others a good listen yet). Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!

My prof is not a warm fuzzy fellow but I do greatly appreciate the distance he keeps between us and him. It reminds us who's the boss and who's the student, and it's always been my assertion that your advisor is not your friend; s/he's your advisor. After you graduate, then you can be friends.

Glad you're enjoying the Tori! To Venus and Back is my second-fave of all her albums; Little Earthquakes is the favorite because it's the one I heard first. And the CD is worth it just for the live disc. Have fun with the singles!

Hehehe...or never speak with her again. :D I agree with you about appropriate distance...at this point, an advisor needs to be an authority, not a buddy. I think that many of my prof's problems dealing with certain people in the lab have to do with the fact that she hasn't been able to establish herself as an authority figure. They don't respect her. Interestingly, it's the same with her kids -- she tried very hard to be their friend, forgot to be a parent, and so to this day, they don't mind a word she says. One of them is sixteen now, so things are getting rather interesting.

Little Earthquakes has always been my favorite, too. :)

The live stuff is *great*... I was particularly excited to hear "Little Earthquakes" live since she didn't sing it when I saw her in college (just after Boys for Pele came out).
