...that started out with a big laugh from our bossman, of all people. We were all at Social having beers, and he decided to ask the group what we thought of his Christmas situation. Both his sons are coming home for the holiday and bringing their lady friends, and he's got three rooms and four people. The upshot is that he doesn't know whether he's behind the times to not allow his sons to sleep in the same room as their lady friends (Rob and I shook our heads "no," Melanie said "well..." to which the two of us replied, "your parents are hippies, they don't count." Her parents are hippies, too.) So bossman was ruminating about why his wife is really the one with the problem; he said that his kids are 30 and 27 y/o and at this point in their lives... well... they have experience. To which I said that "well if you had daughters, it would be a WHOLE different story."

He started to laugh and said "yeah - boys in the barn, girls in the attic, and me on the stairs..." "With a shotgun?" I suggested helpfully. Of course the group is on the floor and now we all have this great mental image of bossman in overalls with a shotgun on the stairs...

I don't know why we always end up talking about sex in this group. Last week it was whether you'd ever caught your parents.
what else...

went to lab on Saturday and scanned another dj
made tortellini soup for dinner

put up tree
baked gingersnaps and some coconut/chocolote/almond bars
made roast leg of lamb for dinner (with gravy!)
decorated tree
got sniped on eBay (well the item wasn't more than $20 worth of "I want it" anyway)
watched the Giants lose
made a new mix CD
started getting sick, just in time for the holidays. :P

Now, I just wish she'd act like a professor and stop telling me about all those trips to the doctor or the couples therapy she and her on-off fiance are going through. Zoiks.

My prof is not a warm fuzzy fellow but I do greatly appreciate the distance he keeps between us and him. It reminds us who's the boss and who's the student, and it's always been my assertion that your advisor is not your friend; s/he's your advisor. After you graduate, then you can be friends.

Glad you're enjoying the Tori! To Venus and Back is my second-fave of all her albums; Little Earthquakes is the favorite because it's the one I heard first. And the CD is worth it just for the live disc. Have fun with the singles!

Hehehe...or never speak with her again. :D I agree with you about appropriate distance...at this point, an advisor needs to be an authority, not a buddy. I think that many of my prof's problems dealing with certain people in the lab have to do with the fact that she hasn't been able to establish herself as an authority figure. They don't respect her. Interestingly, it's the same with her kids -- she tried very hard to be their friend, forgot to be a parent, and so to this day, they don't mind a word she says. One of them is sixteen now, so things are getting rather interesting.

Little Earthquakes has always been my favorite, too. :)

The live stuff is *great*... I was particularly excited to hear "Little Earthquakes" live since she didn't sing it when I saw her in college (just after Boys for Pele came out).
