It was a busy weekend...
Dec. 10th, 2001 10:31 am...that started out with a big laugh from our bossman, of all people. We were all at Social having beers, and he decided to ask the group what we thought of his Christmas situation. Both his sons are coming home for the holiday and bringing their lady friends, and he's got three rooms and four people. The upshot is that he doesn't know whether he's behind the times to not allow his sons to sleep in the same room as their lady friends (Rob and I shook our heads "no," Melanie said "well..." to which the two of us replied, "your parents are hippies, they don't count." Her parents are hippies, too.) So bossman was ruminating about why his wife is really the one with the problem; he said that his kids are 30 and 27 y/o and at this point in their lives... well... they have experience. To which I said that "well if you had daughters, it would be a WHOLE different story."
He started to laugh and said "yeah - boys in the barn, girls in the attic, and me on the stairs..." "With a shotgun?" I suggested helpfully. Of course the group is on the floor and now we all have this great mental image of bossman in overalls with a shotgun on the stairs...
I don't know why we always end up talking about sex in this group. Last week it was whether you'd ever caught your parents.
what else...
went to lab on Saturday and scanned another dj
made tortellini soup for dinner
put up tree
baked gingersnaps and some coconut/chocolote/almond bars
made roast leg of lamb for dinner (with gravy!)
decorated tree
got sniped on eBay (well the item wasn't more than $20 worth of "I want it" anyway)
watched the Giants lose
made a new mix CD
started getting sick, just in time for the holidays. :P

Date: 2001-12-11 12:36 pm (UTC)Indeed ! ;) LOL !
it'a always nice when you can have a few laughs with the lab group and the advisor joins in on the good atmosphere, no matter what the topic is. It certainly makes lab life more livable.
I hope you'll feel better soon !

hope your exam goes well tomorrow!
Re:
Date: 2001-12-12 01:23 am (UTC)Heh heh, that's the good thing with slightly socially inept bossmen, they don't notice when ppl laugh b/c they suddenly feel embarassed. :) You should have seen my first bossman, he was actually pretty funny that way, but a nice person too. Not as bad as I made him out in the story.
Hey, that's good ! Hopefully you'll avoid the cold. Did you ever try the herbal medicine everyone claims helps against cold, equinacia ? I've never tried it b/c I think I may be allergic to the herb itself.
Thanks ! I think it went ok. Some questions were badly formulated and that's bad for a multiple choice exam where the question has to be precise and clear, and some questions I just had to choose "C" on, but mostly it went fine. :)

Date: 2001-12-12 07:18 am (UTC)No, I haven't tried echinacea. It's supposed to be pretty good for colds but it might not have the same effect for allergies, which aren't caused by a virus like a cold is. It seems that the current problem is most likely related to the warm weather and therefore unseasonable pollen we've been having recently.
Time heals all wounds and images of bossmen. :) It sounded like you had a good relationship with him anyway, if you had lunch and interesting chat all the time.
Re:
Date: 2001-12-12 07:48 am (UTC)no that was Bossman Bo... the other bossman was a bit less nice and I never had lunch with him.
I didn't realize you were feeling bad b/c of allergy, I thought you were taking the allergy medicine for the cold symptoms.

Re:
Date: 2001-12-14 06:51 am (UTC)nice to have allergies in the middle of December, isn't it ;P at least it's weird.
There isn't much to tell about the other bossman b/c he wasn't very social and mostly kept away from the lab. He didn't have time to help us much and mostly gave his input when we had come to the writing phase. Let's just say that he wasn't the ideal advisor for inexperienced students but he got things done, that's for sure. His story is a bit like the German lab I told you about, first lauded and given a lot of money and then losing political support. Kind of a sad story really...
