Husband and I went out to see Batman Begins last night. We'd heard it was a tremendous improvement on the franchise, especially after Joel Schumacher made such a pathetic wreck out of it.

After seeing it, I would definitely agree. The movie is loosely based on "Batman: Year One" and details how Batman got to be Batman. It details the fundamentals of the Dark Knight through exposition:

1. Bruce Wayne/Batman is driven by the death of his parents.
2. Batman is the greatest martial artist ever.
3. Batman does not kill.

Before I start talking about the movie:

You know you're an irrevocable science nerd when Lucius Fox is sitting at one of his instruments at Wayne Enterprises and you notice that 1. the instrument is a gas chromatograph with an autosampler 2. it's an old model, probably an Agilent because of the autosampler design, but might be an HP because of its age 3. the instrument details well that Lucius has been packed away in the back basement because if his department was worth anything, he wouldn't have a shitty old HP to work with.

Well, what do you know. Sho Hayami is voicing Aizen Sousuke in Bleach.

I knew I recognized that shexay voice from somewhere.

Back from Montreal. We left at about 10 AM this morning, and husband was his usual grudge-you-a-potty-break self on the drive back. We got back to Bedminster at about 4:30, and then he went above and beyond the call of duty and hauled the three air conditioners out of the attic. After four sweltering days with no relief in Montreal, we need a little AC-lovin'.

On the way back, I was able to make use of my laptop and watch about 10 episodes of Bleach. Started to get very interesting by ep 19, so I'll have to download some more. When the laptop gave out, I read my husband's copy of Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck. It was a more than appropriate book for a road trip, and by the time Steinbeck was wrapping up his narrative, we were wrapping up our trip.

One part of the book resonated particularly with me. At the end of the book, Steinbeck loses his taste for the trip and pushes on for home with no real interest in stopping. In his case, he had just seen some distasteful events in the South, but I identified with the feeling. No question that we had a blast in Montreal, but by this morning, I was more than ready to leave.

Part of it was the morning-after-Christmas feeling of the race and the party being over, and now it's back to business. Part of it was the annoyance of not knowing where to go for a meal. As [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern has observed about French wines, so it goes for French food, even in Montreal - when it's good, it's great; when it's not, it's bad indeed, and there's not a reliable way of finding that out. All we had was our Fodor's guide, which tended to recommend very expensive restaurants that require reservations. Next year, we'll get a Zagat survey.

Part of it was the language barrier. Not to generalize about Canada too much, but it's very like America, except in Quebec. Most of the Quebecois speak some English, and I speak enough French to get myself in trouble, so there's a level of understanding, but it's very strange to find that island of French-Canadian with the juggernaut of the US to the south and English in all the surrounding Canadian provinces.

It wasn't just the language, though... hard for me to put a finger on it. I would have to say that on some level, I felt I was unwelcome in Montreal, like the restaurants etc. were tolerating the tourists and the English for the Grand Prix weekend. This may well have been true, as it's a huge burden to host the Grand Prix, with its Chinese-scale crowds and litter and noise. Yet the Quebecois are also known for being proud and for considering themselves still a part of France, to the point where that secession referendum comes up every couple years. (Incidentally, most of the French I've talked to about Quebec look on the Quebecois as provincial and funny-talking, not a part of France at all.) Maybe that explains why I felt we got a much warmer reception in Paris than in Montreal, although again, that could have been a race weekend thing.

Either way, I feel like Steinbeck did on a smaller scale, happy to be home where I know the rules, where the waiter will bring me water without me having to ask, and it will be a big glass with ice in it. It's something of a relief also to not get my languages confused after a few days of immersion - once the French starts coming back, it's hard not to start speaking a patois of French and English.

Anyway, that's all with my F1 fannishness until next year. :)

Nice to see an American driver back in F1. Scott Speed made his debut as Red Bull's third driver this weekend in Montreal, and he did a respectable job. Not the best out there, but not the worst; ended second practice early with a spin. One hopes to see him in a couple races in a few years.

(He's not related to Lake Speed, for those of you who followed NASCAR in the late eighties.)

Large image follows.

If I told you all that tonight I saw a man who was wearing a Spider-Man muscle suit and a sailor hat doing the Robot while smoking a cigar, you all probably would not believe me.

However, tonight I saw a man who was wearing a Spider-Man muscle suit and a sailor hat doing the Robot while smoking a cigar.

We are mightily hoping to run into him again this weekend for a photo.

Off to the Grand Prix of Canada in Montreal in about 5 hours! And super duper thanks to Michelle and Todd, whoever they are, for getting us pit passes for Thursday.

In a superhuman attempt to look like one of the Beautiful People for one weekend, I have packed four pairs of shoes, not counting the shoes to wear in the shower. (we are staying at McGill Uni for the duration - for $45 USD/night, I don't mind pretending to be a college student again. Plus there's free Internet.)

Husband painted my toesies. I love him. He did a great job, too.

Since the compy is coming along with me, I can post photos as the weekend progresses.

Forza Ferrari!

Things you enjoy, even when no one around you wants to go out and play. What lowers your stress/blood pressure/anxiety level? Make a list, post it to your journal... and then tag 5 friends and ask them to post it to theirs.

Sewing of any kind (embroidery, costuming)
Sitting on the couch in PJs watching trash TV and eating cereal out of the box
Yoga
Reading. Most anything will do.
A little... quality time alone. Yeah.

The new intern is a friggin' gift from god after Annie.

Me: I like your shirt - it has a lovely Asian theme.

Her: Thanks! I love Asian-themed things.

Me: *_*

Me: I do too! Unfortunately, it kind of extends to me being an anime fiend.

Her: I like anime too! I've seen Sailor Moon and all that...

Me: *_* *_*

::later::

Intern and I are talking a bit about mutual interests. She likes anime but does not know what to watch, since the Comcast on-demand is not too specific.

Her: So what's Trigun about? Is it romantic, dramatic...?

Me: Oh, don't encourage me. Really. You're not doing yourself any favors.

1) Total number of fandoms I like:

Like as in "got involved and wrote fic and stuff?" Four to six. Like as in "got fangirly over?" That would require too much thought to count out.

2) My first fandom ever:

Probably "Star Trek." I loved Star Wars best, but I went to a Star Trek convention at 16, so that probably counts more towards fandom points.

3) My most recent fandom:

Samurai Champloo.

4) Five fandoms that currently mean a lot to me (in SEMI-order of preference):

1. Samurai Champloo

2. Trigun (not so much for the anime any more as for the friends)

3. RahXephon

4. Tekken (b/c of imminent cosplay)

5. Utena (again, imminent cosplay)

5) Tag five people:

Wait in Vain, my Samurai Champloo fanfic, is up!

(Spoilers for the end of the series and ep 11)

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tiggymalvern for the critique and beta. (You were supposed to have been thanked at the end, but FF.net chopped the end off because it doesn't like email addresses.)

Read! Any reviews would be happily accepted, because I am a review whore I like knowing how ppl liked my fic, even if they didn't.

[Unspawny] The ultimate game would be a game sorta like The Sims.
[Unspawny] Except it would be called 'Angst'.
[Unspawny] And you would see how many angsty people you can befriend, screw over, and then befriend again.
[frog] you just described Livejournal: The Game

This page took me all night to create. Dragging and dropping umpty-eighteen fics into 700-px wide tables is not the most entertaining way to spend an evening.

If anyone knows how to fix a background image in a table cell and adjust its opacity, can they pls tell me? I know a teeny bit of CSS now! Go me!

In other news, Season 2 of Samurai Jack is out. Watcha!

It's always nice to spend 'em mostly at home.

It ended with a bit of excitement, though. I was bouncing around the kitchen last night and whacked the back of my hand into a chair. Husband was afraid it had been fractured (he's had that happen before, most notably from hitting his brother in the head when they were kids. Although his mother was not amused, the hospital staff was) but it turned out to be OK. They gave me a brace to put on it, which makes typing difficult, and if I want to work in the lab I have to put a glove on under the brace.

Friday we went to a coworker's house to his Movie Night. He was drunk off his ass when we got there, which amused the hell out of me. We had fun with croquet and the movie, but we had to leave early because husband got cold. He is not too good at planning ahead for contingencies. I'd brought a blanket, but it didn't seem to help.

Saturday we were supposed to help my folks bring the boat around to Red Bank, but there's a leak in the forward cabin that Silverton has to fix. Instead, we visited them for the Preakness and had dinner with them, my uncle, and my aunt. My uncle looks ill, he's losing weight b/c he's having trouble keeping his food intake up after the surgery.

Sunday, my husband and I met up with [livejournal.com profile] fadingembers and [livejournal.com profile] jaina at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers to see their Japonisme exhibit. The exhibit was very small, so we spent more time looking at the Soviet propaganda posters and puzzling over the modern art. Afterwards we went to lunch and it took forever. When we got home, I went online and had the rare pleasure of catching [livejournal.com profile] fireceremony for cosplay chatter and potential con plans (well, if I move to Boston, which is becoming more and more of a possibility.)

And that's about it!
moonwise: (jin is hot)
Yesterday, I was thinking about how [livejournal.com profile] fadingembers said that Jin and Shino would have pale, quiet babies.

Then I started thinking about what kind of babies Mugen and Yatsuha would have.

Then I thought about Jay and Silent Bob.

IT WORKS
