Yep, I'm back from vacation. I will write more about it later, with pictures, but I'm too lazy right now to say more than it was unbelieveably posh and that one could quickly get used to such civilized living with a concierge and pastries every afternoon.
ETA: This is the best thing I have ever seen.
On to Bleach 56.
( spoilers and musing )

Woo, vacation!
Nov. 10th, 2005 11:57 amOff to The Breakers for the weekend! This is my and my husband's gift to one another for our 5th anniversary, so it's gonna be posh. As husband put it, "I'm having a dilemma. I don't know whether I should sit by the pool, or by the ocean." We're officially going for a wedding, but it's kind of tangential because I couldn't pick the bride or the groom out of a lineup.
See you all Monday!
See you all Monday!
Weekend stuff
Nov. 7th, 2005 04:15 pmI think this is the only meaningful post I make all week. :P
Week 3 of Let's Travel All Over the US landed us in Buffalo to visit our friends P&L, whom we haven't visited in roughly two years, largely because it's a twelve-hour drive total for about 24 hours of visit. Neither husband nor I were terribly interested in going because it's such a long trip, but I wasn't feeling sick enough to stay home (allergy season) and we had no other excuse.
It was a pleasant enough visit, but still - twelve hour drive, 24-hour activity time. Their three-year-old is very well-behaved and a nice little boy. We visited Whirlpool State Park and the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory, where you walk through an indoor conservatory and the butterflies fly all around you. I kept hoping one of the black butterflies with shocking-pink highlights would land on me for a photo op (hee hee, hell butterfly) but I had to settle for an orange one. Will try to post photos later.
We had dinner at home with P&L, where P was very excited to show off his steak-cooking prowess. It was... fair. We had some heated discussions over dinner, mostly concerning religion (P has Found God and has taken to it with the same fervor with which he embraces any dogma he favors at the time) and then we watched Revenge of the Sith. I was hoping it would be better than the other offerings in the series, but alas, the dialogue was cringe-inducing and the bombastic finish left me completely unaffected. (I will have to write a rant on that some other time.)
Home again on Sunday, in time to watch the second half of the Giants game. Tonight I have a pile of laundry to tackle and hopefully an earlier bedtime.
Oh, and I started reading Death Note. Woo.

Brief story from tonight's hockey game
Nov. 1st, 2005 11:00 pmWe left the Devils/Penguins game and joined a line of cars funneling into the EZPass lane. Mr. Important in his Mercedes-Benz cut in front of us at the last second. I flipped him off. He went through the lane, then we went through the lane just in time to see an 18-wheeler run him off the road onto the shoulder. Then we cut him off to keep him from getting back onto the road and I flipped him off AGAIN. It was great.
Bedtime.
Bedtime.
It's a sad day for Giants fans too
Oct. 25th, 2005 12:34 pmEveryone else has posted about Rosa Parks' death, but I just read the following:
Wellington Mara dies at 89
It makes me so sad. He was friendly with my grandmother's side of the family (the Morgans) and when my grandma slowed down later in her life, he was responsible for the "magic pass" that let us park closer to the stadium so Granny could still get to games.
I'm so happy he got to see one more thrilling game before he died.

I think I need a day off from my weekend!
Lots of goings-on, and it won't quit until mid-November (which makes me a sad panda, but there is effing little to be done about it.) Next weekend is the Q's wine-pressing on Sat. and a 5K race on Sunday. Weekend after that we have to go to Buffalo NY to visit friends-with-kid, and I am so not looking forward to that. Weekend after that is Amy and Philip's wedding in Palm Beach, and for three glorious days, we will sit in the sun and do nothing.
( Weekend recap + football blather )

We finally cracked open the first season of House tonight, and both husband and I loved the show. We'll probably watch this one a lot faster than Arrested Development.
So I'm watching the show, and at one point, House and his boss are walking outside. There's a glassed-in building behind them that looks a lot like Frist Campus Center at Princeton University. Huh, thinks I, that looks familiar. Must be a similar building out in CA somewhere.
Watch watch watch, and then the end of the show. The camera starts to pull away from the "hospital."
Me: That looks like Frist... WAIT, THAT IS FRIST! LOOK, THERE'S WOODY WOO, AND THERE'S THE MOLECULAR BIOLOGY BUILDING! *rewinds* HEY, THE CHEMISTRY BUILDING! HIIIIIIIIIII!
The funniest part for me is that the hospital is badged as the "Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital." Of course, there is nonesuch, but there is a hospital very nearby to where these outdoor scenes were shot. My good friend Dr. Becky had a rotation at that hospital, which does have a clinic, and she HATED doing the clinic for the same reasons House did. XD An awful lot of the patients she saw had nothing wrong with them that a good night's sleep and an Advil or Sudafed wouldn't fix, and yet they seemed to very much enjoy coming into the clinic and complaining at length about their general frailty and malaise.
Good stuff. Will watch more.
ETA: GIP!

I'm picking Cocteau Twins, because that's a challenge. :D

Bleach 51-53
Oct. 14th, 2005 09:56 pmGeez oh man, after watching all that Bleach, I think I'm gonna run around in cosplay and shout "BAN KAI" at my unsuspecting husband!
*cough* Right.
So far we have had a three episode-long peeing contest, but we'll get to that later. First:
Ichimaru Gin, you are one evil fuck. You are sick and twisted and dreadful and just so reminiscent of Dr. Romano from ER. You are horrible and scary and strange and I love you so much that way and don't ever change. especially that nasty "bye bye" thing you do so very well.
And now, the last three eps, in metaphorical summary:
( Who can pee the farthest? )

Bleach 1-3
Oct. 14th, 2005 10:50 amFor all three of you who haven't seen Bleach yet...
Strawberry-blond Ichigo (his name is a play on his hair color) sees dead people. Ichigo also sees Rukia, a black-clad shinigami whose mission is to exterminate Hollows. Not surprisingly, Ichigo ends up with Rukia's powers after she gets in trouble, and now it's his job to exterminate Hollows. Bickering ensues.
Bleach 01
Bleach 02
Bleach 03
But that's not really what Bleach is about. Turns out it was a big sin for Rukia to give Ichigo her powers, and her pals back at Soul Society are pissed. Enter a host of asskicking chicks, hot bishie captains and subcaptains, humor, angst, and the best black cat in the history of anime.
(Of course, that's not till around ep 15. Don't be put off by the inital Hollow-of-the-Day format.)
Happy watching.

yay anime day
Oct. 9th, 2005 09:31 pmGot to visit with
jaina,
fadingembers, and
pyrobovaphiliac today, since Onnafest didn't work out.
Watched a bunch of things:
Portrait of Petite Cosette - terrible script, story isn't good enough to redeem it.
Planetes - thought it was going to be another robot anime; was actually very funny.
Elfen Lied - Chii? Nyu?
Speed Grapher - everyone loves crack and porn! And creepy dentists.
Samurai Jack - the Scotsman rocks.
I am so looking forward to next Anime Night.

Mess and less
Oct. 7th, 2005 04:46 pmMy corner of the office has bad feng shui, what with the stacks of unsorted papers lying around and stuff scattered about.
Today someone was throwing out a stack of five paper holders, so I grabbed them and gave that whatsit in the corner that holds papers to Rick. I divided up my stack o'crap into the slots, put envelopes, tape, and disks in the top shelf, and voila! I have desk space again!
And it looks like I'm all organized and shit, when in fact now I REALLY don't know where anything is. :D
Plus, it gives muppet Beaker something to sit against.

This should end the shipper wars
Oct. 6th, 2005 02:09 pmHarry Potter is gay!
Should 12-year-olds really be watching Little Britain? I've seen it, and it's terribly funny, but somehow I doubt most parents would consider it age-appropriate for preteen youngsters.
That having been said, the "only gay in the village" skit is hysterical.
Reverend Graham Taylor, who penned the novel "Shadowmancer" which, like the tales of the famous boy wizard created by J.K. Rowling, centers on witchcraft and battling evil, got his marching orders after teachers accused him of homophobia.
"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, southwest England, referring to a catchphrase from the popular British comedy TV show "Little Britain."
