moonwiseYep, I'm back from vacation. I will write more about it later, with pictures, but I'm too lazy right now to say more than it was unbelieveably posh and that one could quickly get used to such civilized living with a concierge and pastries every afternoon.

On to Bleach 56.
Really, this is more musing than anything else.
Finally we see the fight between Yoruichi and Soi Fong. It was like mud wrestling with spirit power. Bleach has so many kickass chicks in it that it's hard to know who to like best.
On a more serious note, I'm very happy to see some equality in the slashiness rear its head. Every anime in existence has its yaoi ships, with varying degrees of subtext to make the shippers happy. I think it's fair to say that Wolfwood and Vash have enough subtext to read it slant, so to speak; other examples are Ban and Ginji, all of Saiyuki, Cloud and Sephiroth, whatever. Yaoi ships are very common, and with the cultural background of m/m love and love between comrades being more pure than m/f love, it's to be expected out of many, if not most, anime.
But damn, it's great to see two females engaged in exactly the type of charged behavior that gets m/m ships going. In the great and tiresome War of the Ships, it's almost exclusively the Yaoi Fans vs. the Het Fans. It's something of a puzzle to me as to where the yuri fans are in all of that - they must be out there, but yuri gets no love at all. Maybe two girls together is somehow less interesting than two boys. Maybe the girls in question aren't interesting or layered enough to attract interest (to which I say, go watch thineself some Utena.) I don't pretend to understand why there's such a significant bias towards m/m pairings in the World O'Slash.
But man... if you wanted to instill the yuri genre with the same kind of angst and UST that is so common to yaoi, Soi Fong and Yoruichi are a great place to start. I'm glad to see it, and I hope the pairing gets some attention, because I'm all for balance in love and pr0ny fanfic.
