Sometimes at work, I have to amuse myself.
One of my friends ordered a remote control for Powerpoint presentations. You plug the USB hoozit into your computer, turn on the remote, and away you go. It advances slides, goes full-screen, has a timer in it, and is also a laser pointer. It is definitely Nifty.
As
sarcasticval taught me, the proper term for "USB hoozit" is "dongle."
We were having our dry run for the Phase 1 review a week or so ago, and I brought my remote along for people to try out.
Me *brightly*: "Who wants to use the dongle?"
Room: *SPIT-TAKE*
They did like my Powerpoint dongle, though. I'll have to scare up the part number.

what's going on these days
Jan. 10th, 2008 10:00 amLet's see... what's new...
I might be going to Sweden in February on an audit trip. This would be extremely awesome, especially if any or all of the following happen: 1. I get to fly business class 2. my boss lets me stay a couple extra days to visit
fireceremony 3. my boss lets me fly home from seeing
fireceremony on the company dime even though I'd be flying home from a different country 4. that homebound flight is also business class.
We are taking my little cousin Alicia to New York on Saturday to go to the American Girl Place as a Christmas present. Looks like serious business. My husband and I have both been sick, and I was pressuring him to put the trip off a week, but he thinks he'll be well enough to go.
The Giants play Dallas on Sunday, and if you think I will be anywhere but parked in front of the TV screaming my head off, YOU ARE SORELY MISTAKEN. I don't expect them to win, but wouldn't it be exciting if they did? AND THEN I WOULD HAVE TO SCREAM MY HEAD OFF NEXT WEEKEND TOO, YES.
Looks like another year will be spent wasting a perfectly good Saturday sitting on the couch to watch the NFL draft. So sad that Ray Rice is leaving RU, but I want to see where he goes.
FFT is addictive. Good storyline so far, too. The cut-scenes are gorgeous! It almost makes me want to cosplay again. *sniffle*
Still not over this bug that's been going around. It's been almost two weeks of yuck. How annoying.
I have to stop procrastinating on this presentation. Back to work.

happy new year
Jan. 1st, 2008 06:56 pmI wish I could tell you all that I did something interesting for New Year's, but my husband and I are at an age where all of our friends have toddlers, so our usual party pack has turned into a bunch of party poopers. So, we stayed home and had a wild and crazy evening using the pasta roller on the Kitchen Aid for the first time to make sheets of pasta for homemade ravioli. Husband found a half-bottle of champagne, and we had a toast and went to bed just after midnight like the old farts we are.
Just as well, because I have managed to catch my usual post-Christmas bug (which brings to mind the miserable sinus infection I had at Ohayocon last year) and it makes me glad I am not getting on an airplane in a few days. Husband spent the day moving a phone jack for me and has been bringing me soup and tea and I love him very much. :)
Besides New Year's anticlimax, we have been busy. After my parents left, there was a Q family party, and then we went to the Giants/Patriots game. It was a good game, even though the Giants lost. The downside was that my aunt, who owns the two seats next to us, had donated her seats to a charity auction, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing. However, the winner was a real dickhead. He arrived drunk with his brother-in-law as the designated driver, and he continued to drink through the entire game. Partway through the second quarter, he thought it would be fun to scream, "CHEATERS!" and "CHIESELERS!" as often as the impulse made it to his brain through the alcoholic haze. It got old in a hurry, and he didn't quit until the game as over.
Just to make the game more fun, husband discovered on the way back out to the car that he had lost the car key. At midnight. At the end of a football game. Needless to say, it was an unhappy and tense time until husband got back into the stadium and discovered that the usher had found the key. Thank goodness, or we'd still be there.
Then it was husband's birthday, as he is one of the unfortunates who has a birthday around Christmas. I went for the esoteric this year and bought him a bottle of absinthe from France. We haven't tried it yet, because the glasses and spoons are still on their way. But, I hope it will be drinkable and not too bitter!
Back to work tomorrow, unless this bug gets worse. Let's hope not, it sucks to be sick.

It's obnoxious to list all your gifts, so I won't. But I am very pleased about getting a new digital camera (my old one finally tanked) and a PSP (used, not new, but as long as it works!) Gamestop is having a big sale this week, so there will be some used games under the tree before too long.
Also, the word seems to have gotten out that I like to drink tea, and I got a metric assload of tea for Christmas. My MIL gave me six boxes of Celestial Seasonings (omfg) and my parents got me a big ol' box from Teavana. I'm going to be peeing up a storm for months. Not that you needed to know that, but now you do.
Parents left this morning after staying for a couple of days. We were really happy to have them stay for a while, but I was ready for them to leave this morning and they were ready to go.
Also, all my Internet/LJ friends: thank you for your cards. I'm not sure what it says when I get more cards from my Internet buddies than I do from my family, but I think it's somewhere along the lines of "you guys are great." Merry Xmas and happy holidays to all. :)

I have a new PSP and a new digital camera, among many other lovely presents. I hope the fat man was good to all of you and that you have been enjoying your holiday with friends and family!

I believe you have my stapler
Dec. 12th, 2007 10:49 amI misplaced my Official Red Swingline Stapler on the copy machine the other day. This morning I realized it was missing. I would have gone around asking about it except there was no way to do it with a straight face. (It was since found in the secretary's office.)

I, for one, welcome our new Russian overlords.
In related news, this post on JF made me think of the time that
fadingembers (and
jaina, were you there too?) and I went to the Kam Man market in Edison looking for bootlegs DVDs and that weird Chinese guy in the parking lot told us a very long story about a Chinese movie with three monks and then tried to ask us out. Good times.

things I learned today
Nov. 9th, 2007 12:40 pmIf you put the plastic container from a Corning sterile filter into the sonicator/heat bath to warm your mobile phase up from being in the refrigerator, you will melt the neck of the container. Srsly. Even though I'd only set the thing to 27C!
Maybe I should take the top off next time.

quick-hit update
Oct. 29th, 2007 08:45 amI haven't updated in a while.
1. I no longer has kitchen floor. After hearing how much it was going to cost us to rip it up and the dispose of the rubble, husband decided he/we were going to do it ourselves. Some parts have been painless, but the part where we poured methylene chloride-laced floor stripper all over and then chieseled up floor paper was not.
2. We went to the opera to see Madame Butterfly for the first time on Friday 10/19. It was a good experience, but next time we will try to be more careful about the location of our seats. We were aaaaaaaaaall the way over to the right in the orchestra.
3. Wine pressing over the weekend. Imagine my excitement. Ate myself stupid.
4. Learned to fake a taiko knot by following a tutorial at the Immortal Geisha forums. Now I have a Halloween costume, w00t.
5. Thursday we leave for Florida. ...Yay?

I like book memes.
These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicize those you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list.

It's been a good weekend for all my teams
Rutgers beat USF, to the general joy of the stadium. We went to the game and had a very fun time, although it was not the euphoric high of a year ago.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikonnen won a three-way shootout with the McLarens to win the F1 Drivers' Championship by one point. He's had terrible luck for his whole career, and he certainly should have won by now. Kudos to Kimi! He actually smiled during his post-race interview, a real true big grin.
The Giants won against the struggling Niners. They'd better enjoy it, because the next big test is the 'Boys.
We walked around our neighborhood tonight. It only took us two months to do it. And finally we have a bed that's not on the floor.
All in all, good times.
Time for pot roast.
