I'll just do this and see what kind of response I get. ^_^

Do any of you have a word that is unique to you that you use for something, sort of a nickname for an object or a possession? How did it get started and do you still use it?

For example...

When I was little, I had trouble saying "ginger ale," so it came out as "gerowl." We still call ginger ale this.

My parents had friends who called the television a "waddy," because their child called his pacifier a waddy. The name stuck with my parents, and it was quite common to hear "Turn the waddy off and come to dinner."

Anyone else? ^_^

I used to sing Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer as "... then one FROGGY chrismas eve..." I thought it was froggy not foggy. You see I was never very good at picking lyrics out of songs I heard, I still am not. Perhaps that's one reason I like world music so much, because it's not important if I know exactly what is being said (to me the voice is just another instrument). A more contemporary case of this, is Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" song--I always thought she was singing "This is Scary."

The list like this goes on. Doesn't matter how much something makes sense or not, sometimes I just get funny thoughts in my head.

I have a couple that I picked up from my oldest brother, based on things that he said when he was little. When I was a teenager, I was playing badminton with my brothers and sisters one time, and my sister almost stepped on her own sunglasses (I don't remember how). My brother said something about being careful not to break the "sasses." That's what he called glasses when he was little. I thought it was so funny that I (and now Brian) refer to glasses as "sasses." This same brother, called birds "fee-fees" when he was little. I still call them that when I'm being silly.

One that is more unique to me though is the term "magic pants." That's how I refer to pajama pants, because, as I've mentioned, they magically improve my mood when I put them on, be they flannel, cotton, or otherwise. (This is something that I came up with while in grad school, and my whole family calls them this now). The origin of the phrase had nothing to do with pajamas though. Our department has a softball team (called "Run DNA" - har), and one time when the manager was gone, I was asked to keep score. I didn't know any of the players on the other team (and they didn't have uniforms with numbers), so I wrote descriptions of them in the lineup instead. There was one guy on the opposing team who actually wore those special baseball pants. He was the only one in the entire league who wore them (that I ever saw, anyway), and so I guessed that perhaps they were magical. They held the secret to his softball prowess. And so I dubbed him "Magic Pants" on the score sheet.

Wheeeeee!
