I didn't watch that exact report because I'm at work, but I've seen some other articles about this. This gives me rage, too, and I'm probably not thinking very clearly, so I apologize if it's poorly thought out or inflammatory, but: these services are part of the job description for pharmacists, aren't they? If you're morally opposed to an established and integral part of your job (i.e. dispensing legal treatments), perhaps you should consider a career shift for yourself, rather than trying to overhaul the entire profession. By law. Rarrrr.

Yeah, it's kinda like saying "I want to be a priest, but I'm not religious." Do your job or GTFO.
There's a law in Illinois (I don't know about anywhere else) that states that if a pharmacy employs someone who will refuse to sell contraceptives or birth control or anything because of a personal, moral obligation, they are required to have another pharmacist working there at the same time as the one who refuses who will sell the birth control, etc.
Even though I don't use BC (I'd sooner abstain, which I kinda do), this shit is ridiculous. I'm desperate for a Democrat in the office next term! Provided if Obama gets elected he isn't assassinated before his first year is up...I hate this country.
In addition to the rampant 'moral' stupidity of this proposal (which makes me RAGE as well), I still can't figure out how they're going to make it work when so many women take birth control pills for health/medical reasons having nothing to do with contraception.
Just one more way for their ultra-right wing religious beliefs to impinge on millions of women's rights. That they tried to sneak it into something so innocious is typical.
These same folks who are arguing about when life begins obviously don't consider that many fertilized eggs just don't implant. I'm sure the response to that is, "It was God's will."
My sister takes birth control pills so that she can have regular periods. Without it she will go several months between periods. I'm not sure why exactly.
A friend of mine take them because she has poly-cystic-ovarian-something-or-other that basically means without the pill she would have irregular, heavy, very painful bleeding.
I suppose the Bush Administration is unaware that A Lot Of Women Suffer From Menstrual Problems That The Pill Can Easily Solve. The bastards.
I hate Bush. If he were dying I would seriously have to pause and think about it before I would try to save his life (though I know I would in the end, I would probably give the man CPR while crying about how I hate him). The man vetoed giving poor, uninsured children health insurance, for God's sake. If he doesn't give a damn about children, why should he give a damn about women?
Because women have babies, and we definitely need women to have babies and make more good little Christan taxpayers! But they don't have to be healthy little taxpayers, no.
Isn't it amazing how those who make the biggest deal out of their faith are usually the ones who don't follow the spirit of it? Sometimes I picture Jesus standing on a cloud shouting down to Earth, "I SAID 'LOVE ONE ANOTHER,' YOU IDIOTS!"
"I mean, I know I said that the poor would always be with you and that you would suffer for my sake, but I didn't mean for you go out there yourself and cause the poverty and suffering. 'The first shall be last and the last shall be first' does not mean you go out and make sure everybody else is last."
Man, every time these birth control initiatives come up, no matter how they try to disguise it, I just want to stand on the corner and scream MY BODY! MIIINE!!
The racism angle you brought up earlier is something I'd never considered, either. *headdesk*

Date: 2008-08-02 04:36 pm (UTC)But, yeah. I'm tired of this paternalistic bullshit of "God knows what's better for you than you do, and we'll pass a law to make sure of it."
