What to do with a journal
Jun. 27th, 2004 10:47 pmI've been thinking a lot recently about the keeping of this journal, and what I want it to be for. When I first started keeping an electronic journal almost... what, three years ago? it seemed I had a lot more interesting to say. Now, it seems I spend a lot of my entries talking about something inconsequential.
It makes me wonder what prompted the switch, and the only overarching thought is that Real Life got more interesting, and instead of going to work in a lab where no one even said "good morning," now I go to work and spend half the day laughing my ass off or pulling my hair out.
You can't write about that kind of thing in a journal, where the best explanation you can come up with is "you had to be there." I don't think I'm a deep or a thoughtful person most of the time, at least so much as I'm capable of verbalizing it. It would be nice to be that way, but you can't change an apple into an orange, and it's taken me a long time to try and settle with that.
I have strong opinions about things, but talking a lot about divisive topics is a quick way to stop having friends, especially when your views are probably not shared by most of the people you interact with. So, it's better just to say nothing. Some folks can make LJ Drama and be OK with it; some of us would rather not be the subject of other people's hostility. I count myself among the latter.
So, what to do? Continue to gabble about anime? Or start another journal like
mullenkamp did for the one or two people on my list who might care to read? I'll be thinking about it.
