Date: 2002-04-24 10:16 am (UTC)>Did the Japanese girls you saw have bleached white hair or was it a wig? Could you tell? Maybe American guys are less likely to go to hair extremes for a cosplay. Probably most American guys look at a cosplay the same >way my husband does...
IIRC all of the Japanese Seph cosplayers had wigs, the male had a pretty bad one but at least it was white, he had a great sword and a not so nice coat but at least he had a good stance and had a body type which was slightly believable. One of the girls had a fantastic wig (she had actually managed to make those bangs) and a super detailed coat, she was the Sephy to the very detailed spiky haired female Cloud Orin posted a long time ago (the one with the silly white eyebrows and green contacts). I'm not sure if it was a girl or a boy actually. The other girl is the girl in the pic I posted from Sukebe Panda in my journal. Her hair looks to be either a wig or her own hair spray painted grey, but it looks natural, at least from a distance and her coat and belt are quite nice.
I have seen another Sephy cosplay btw, a Japanese male, white wig, very long hair, quite nice sword.
Anyway, they were far better than the sloppy and OOC looking Seph cosplays we have seen so far from the US, much more detailed and correct costume details and not to mention stance and pose. o_O
If guys don't view cosplay as something that should look similar to the chara's outfit, why do it ?
>However, Teri told me that said character has a white suit, not a black one.
Right... another example of "if you can't be a bit accurate, why do it if no one's going to recognize who you're trying to be."
>They didn't look bad. Teri told me that she had her picture taken with the two of them. The story of how she cosplayed Reno is rather funny. ^_^
Ooooh you must tell more of that when you have the time. That sounds like a fun story. :)
I was thinking what was possible to use as a cattle prod today btw... any ideas ?
I have to go to the toy store and find either a new squirt gun or I have to use the very hokey looking one (but which no one is ever likely to mistake for a real one) squirt gun I already have.
>Isn't that Nida a cutie! :D That same guy had a few other costumes, and they were all top-notch. ^_^
He really was a cutie ! He had chosen a role that fit him (instead of the other way around) so he was comfortable doing Nida look alike poses. :) It's something to think about when choosing a costume too, if you're very timid, you're not likely to do well as say Seifer or Laguna.

Date: 2002-04-24 12:43 pm (UTC)Perhaps American guys just don't have that Sephy touch. :) I did see one Laguna, and the guy underneath was not bad-looking. ^_^ (Mind you, I didn't say "good-looking," but he wasn't bad.)
You're right tho - to play someone like Seph or Seifer or Laguna, you have to be something of a drama queen to pull it off properly. As Teri said to me last night, "It's all in the attitude."
As for cattle prods: Teri recommended that I find a wooden dowel of the proper length and wrap it with electrical tape or something like that. I may poke around online to see if I can find something else, but that sounds like it will do in a pinch.
Best of luck with the gun. I'll keep an eye out for an American substitute in case you get leery about airport security. The last thing we need is for you to get hauled off in Newark for bringing an effing toy squirt gun in...
Re:
Date: 2002-04-24 01:42 pm (UTC)Heh heh, my idea was to mail you the squirt gun on beforehand so I didn't have to have a suspect looking thing in my suitcase... if you take the chance on doing that of course.
Good to hear Teri could supply some advice on how to make a cattle prod, doesn't sound like a too time consuming thing to make.
(I've never seen a real cattle prod, only the not too detailed stick Reno wields in the game)
I'm just looking at some absolutely stunning Korean cosplay (will get a link up in my journal) and it definitely looks as if part of the costume is your attitude and pose and how comfortable you can be in the role... a bit of play acting for the camera it looks like.
Man, browsing these Korean images makes me want to cosplay Christian too... *drool*

Date: 2002-04-25 02:17 pm (UTC)Something that looks like what the guy cosplaying Christian / Hydelloon in my recent most is holding. :) What is that supposed to look like ? Some kind of Desert Eagle ? I'm clueless about large guns.
