Oh man. See, I love useless, fun memes that KNOW they are useless, but ones like the bra thing just annoy me. But just from the wording of it, I got the strong sense that it was titillation with the hasty addition of "OH UM BREAST CANCER AWARENESS, WOO!" to make people more likely to send it.
To me, the bra thing was an activity that was taken up by people who were New to Internets. It's kind of like how you send around every joke forward you receive when you just get your first email address, but eventually you realize how annoying it is.
That's a good point. Either way, I didn't comment negatively on Facebook--no reason for me to piss on everyone's parade over something fairly harmless in the end. :)
Bah. I just know that someday they'll try to tell us that adding phrases with poor grammar and spelling to pictures of cats serves no purpose. But I know better.
I saw one set of instructions that looks like this:
"post just the color of your bra as ur status : for breast cancer awareness and tell ur girls to do the same but dont tell any men. & dont say what its for. just the color"
OH. Okay.
I think you're right - this is the kind of bandwagon casual internet users adore. Virtual flashing, no consequences, instant inclusion in a huge group. We, most of us, grow out of it. :)
This meme is the sort of thing that CollegeActivists (tm) do nowadays. It used to be that you went to a rally, got pumped up about [important issue], and faded into ineffectualness a week or two later. Now you can be even lazier and do all that from the comfort of your home or nearest wifi hotspot. Thank you, The Internet.
On a side note, I'd like to find the people who coin terms like slacktivism and trendlet, and give them a good ol' punch in the face.
