Bachmann later condemned those who had made Holocaust references at the rally. But even a cursory glance at her career reveals that this rising star has long trafficked in some extreme positions. In October last year Bachmann called some of her fellow congressmen anti-American. She has said Obama holds socialist views. She has attacked global warming by saying that carbon dioxide emissions are a natural part of the atmosphere. "Carbon dioxide is not a harmful gas, it is a harmless gas," she said. She has fed into fears of a violent backlash against Obama by saying that "having a revolution every now and then is a good thing". She has spoken of "gangster government" in a speech viewed more than two million times on the internet. She has dubbed Obama's plans to increase AmeriCorps – a government volunteer service group – as a plan to forcibly indoctrinate young people. "I believe there is a very strong chance that we will see young people put into mandatory service... there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people," she told an interviewer. Her language in opposing healthcare reform has been bloodcurdling. At a recent event in Colorado she told her audience: "What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't pass." She is also extremely socially conservative, strongly opposing abortion and gay marriage, and deeply religious. She has described herself as a "fool for Christ".

Yes, she's a fool all right. But I know people who think the healthcare reform idea (just the idea) was worthy of getting a gun for. And they were on disability - with funds from the government. Quite a disconnect there.

Speaking of wackos: Sarah Palin will signing her book in Noblesville, IN on Thursday, November 18. I was asked to go to the signing on behalf of one of the people I know since she knows I have no pressing commitments that would stop me from attending. It is bad enough that I bought her the book for $14.50. Thanks Amazon for raising the price from $9. In order to get a wristband to attend the signing, people are asked to start lining up for 1 of the 1,000 available at 7 AM. There are idiots already waiting outside the bookstore just to get her autograph.

Thank you for posting this. One of the things I've been trying to impress upon my more liberal friends is that the "conservative nutjobs" and the conservative movement in general is a lot more dangerous than the average left-winger gives them credit for. Sadly, the tone of many of your commenters is LOL, another dumb right-winger. It's not Palin/Bachmann/Coulter/etc. who are the actual threat, but rather the masses ready to stand behind them.

The right-wing crazies have a very powerful banner, and they know how to scream loudly and get attention, and they are unmatched at the "plen-t-plaint" (a red-meat issue that gets people riled up, but to which there is no particular resolution; e.g. "kids these days, back in my day we didn't wear our hair long..." etc.) They can, and may, triumph because the other side doesn't know how to deal with their attacks and can be swayed by loud, uncomplicated arguments.

Did you see the South Park where Cartman starts a Lou Dobbs-like show at his school? It was fantastic satire.

Michele Bachmann has been pretty infamous since her remarks last year about putting together committees to determine who is or isn't a Genuine American(TM), all the while completely unaware that this had been tried before before by some guy called McCarthy. When she was called out for those remarks, she blamed the whole thing on Chris Matthews, saying he had "tricked" her into saying them. So, yeah, a wingnut AND a liar.

Sadly, there's not much chance of her getting kicked out of office. Her district is deep, deep red and unless someone gets around to gerrymandering it again, there she will likely stay. Though, considering what happened in NY-23, there might be a silver lining here: far right candidates simply can't win in a moderate district, no matter how many teabaggers get their panties in a twist. So, while we can't get rid of them, it's only select areas which will consistently vote for an extremist without ever seeking out other options.
