First weekend home in a while!

We had to go to a Q family party on Saturday, and husband's brother came up to spend the night with us because we live a lot closer to husband's aunt and uncle than he does. We went to see "The Dark Knight" together, and I enjoyed it - husband in particular was very pleased with the characterization, as he's something of a Batman geek. Heath Ledger's performance was creepy and revolting and sadistic, and this is apparently also in character, but my favorite is still Mark Hamill's Joker.

Did a little gardening on Saturday morning while the boys were out hitting some golf balls at the driving range. We've been away so long that the crabgrass thinks it owns the place. Husband keeps reiterating that it takes a long time to turn around a lawn, and I'll grant that, but we certainly could be more aggressive with the weeds. Around noon, we headed to the party, and it was okay. One of husband's uncles is turning 60 and another 70, so the family made a big fuss and bought nice gifts etc. Unfortunately, one of the birthday boys was quite late due to traffic, and that dragged the evening out a bit.

We stopped by the Verizon store to investigate new phones, since we renewed recently. We'd thought initially to get international phones, but the price of the worldwide phones is exorbitant (WHY???????? there is no good reason for this) and we looked at the free/J&J-discounted ones instead. I salivated over the Voyager phone with the teeny keyboard, and husband surprised me by pricking his ears up at Verizon's iPhone knockoff. Maybe he'd like a surprise...

Sunday was Gardening Day, but thanks to the persistent thunderstorms we've been having for the past week, I was only able to plant about half the stuff that my mother-in-law gave to me. Oh well, have to get that done later this week. She must have been thrilled to get rid of some of her Siberian irises, because there were four huge clumps of them. They'll look lovely next year if they survive the winter.

The Festival of Ballooning is held every year at Solberg Airport during the last weekend in July, and the balloons were up and flying at 7:30 AM on Sunday. We could see them from our bedroom window, since we live about 2 miles from the airport, and we broke out the binoculars to take a peek. The balloons were so cheerful, and we counted at least 30 of them. The Darth Vader and American flag special-shape balloons were out there as well, and I saw a pumpkin-face balloon I'd seen before over the Lehigh Valley. (Our area is very popular with balloonists, especially in the fall.) Our friends gave us tickets, and we cycled up to watch the 6:30 launch, but there was too much wind and the balloons stayed on the ground. Boo. We got some nice photos, though.

We drove down 22 to see if we could see any balloons on...whenever, Saturday? And it was RIDICULOUS. Cars driving 30 mph, pulling over on the shoulder...

We stopped and got gas, and my dad and I were watching them come over 22, and one of the attendants said he watched a couple crash into the field/store/trees across 22, and then one came down literally in the middle of 22, and he was thinking about charging for parking on the shoulder.

Then we turned around, but because my dad can't take the same road twice, we turned around AGAIN to find this mysterious road that meanders through a bunch of farms (traffic was ungodly; one and a half lane road with traffic out the wazoo because everyone was following the balloons) and (after another road change) dumps you on Rattlesnake Bridge Rd. I glared at people on behalf of the farmer whose fields they were traipsing - they had a bunch of horses, and one was extremely displeased with the entire goings-on.
