I think I need a day off from my weekend!
Lots of goings-on, and it won't quit until mid-November (which makes me a sad panda, but there is effing little to be done about it.) Next weekend is the Q's wine-pressing on Sat. and a 5K race on Sunday. Weekend after that we have to go to Buffalo NY to visit friends-with-kid, and I am so not looking forward to that. Weekend after that is Amy and Philip's wedding in Palm Beach, and for three glorious days, we will sit in the sun and do nothing.
Anyway. This weekend was the Far Hills Race Meeting, and our friends Stephanie and Arthur asked us to come with them to the races. They had tickets through the Drew University Alumni Association, and they had a tent in the area. It was all catered and somewhat sheltered from the rain - the weather was cold and misty and nasty. A lot of rich people go to the Hunt, as it's known, and it gave me a perverse amusement to see these girls with their Prada boots on slog through the sloppy muck. (I had duck boots on. Fuck fashion.)
We had a good time, but everyone was happy to come back to our apartment for hot drinks. They invited us back to Stephanie's dad's house for chili, and there was quite a crowd at the house. We watched Holy Grail over wine, chili, and pizza. Then the heavens opened up, and we drove home through a full-on downpour. Yuck.
Today was something I've been looking forward to for a very long time - a tailgate party hosted by yours truly. Usually the tailgate at the Giants game involves hot dogs and crustless sandwiches out of the back of Uncle John's trunk, but we wanted something a bit more... football-y. My cousin was coming out from Denver for the game and was going with his girlfriend, so they said they'd meet us at the stadium for a tailgate. My parents sent us their tickets and the Magic Parking Pass, and then it was planning time.
We secured a big tent from husband's work and bought another folding chair and a few coolers. We had all kinds of food - hot apple cider, soup, a tray of subs, chips, cookies, and beer. It was supposed to rain today, but the weather gods took pity from yesterday and supplied a bright and windy day. The wind was something of a problem, since the tent tried to get airborne and left a big scratch in my car, but a nice couple loaned us a cord to secure the tent to the car with so it stayed in one place.
We had a good crowd. First Chris and Lauren joined us, and then Lauren's friends from her physician's assistant program came by. My friend
ymiinjersey stopped by to say hello also. It was really great to have everyone there!
The game was terrific. The Giants were getting pounded by the Broncos for most of the game, and I was convinced that they were going to lose. After all, the Broncos are one of the best teams in the NFL right now, and the Giants are wobbly. All of a sudden, in the fourth quarter, the offense woke up and then things got interesting. Perhaps over there on the sidelines, they came to the realization that if they didn't score some more points, they were going to lose.
They had a couple of good opportunities and got one very exciting touchdown on a Manning to Burress pass. Then it was back to business as usual, and it looked like Denver was going to put the game away on a field goal. But... NO GOOD! After another three-and-out from Denver, the Jints got the ball back with about two minutes to go.
The Giants went on the march, with good ol' Eli looking more like his brother than his previous sorry performance would indicate. A reception by Shockey put them deep in the red zone, and then...
Well, it's the stuff dreams are made of. Twelve seconds left, and Manning tosses it to Toomer. Toomer comes down with the ball for the touchdown, and the stadium screamed its collective head off. The Giants won it by one point, and Lauren (who is from Denver and is a Broncos fan) required many hugs from Chris. I was sad for her - someone has to win and someone has to lose, and I know that feeling of losing the game at the last second - but hey, a victory is a victory!
The funniest part was my mother. She and I call each other several times during a game, and her last two voice mails (pre- and post-touchdown) were almost incoherent with joy. Next weekend should be a good game if both the Giants' offense and defense show up and decide to play, because our division is all tied up. Especially since Dallas lost. Ha ha ha ha ha.
It's well past time for bed.
