List 10 Anime/Manga Females that you like, or at least think are tolerable. Then write something about them-your first impression, something you like, something you DON'T like, whatever.

There might be some spoilers in here.

1. Integra Hellsing, Hellsing. She's cool, she's collected, she's the Bitch of Steel. She captured the interest of a centuries-old vampire, who's not at all pleased at the idea of not having her around, probably because she kicks his ass regularly. Also, Manga!Integral has a rapier. I love white-haired girls with swords.

2. Juri Arisugawa, Revolutionary Girl Utena. Juri struck me as the most noble of the student council members - vulnerable, but she never lets go of her pride. In her final fight with Utena, even though she's the better swordswoman, she gives up the match voluntarily. Akio tries to win her over, but he never quite succeeds. I admire that.

3. Nanami Kiryuu, Revolutionary Girl Utena. Because she's such a self-centered little bitch. Though I did feel sorry for her by the end of the series.

4. Meryl Stryfe, Trigun. Meryl's not someone I want to be like, but I'm probably more like her than I'd like to think. Watching Vash destroy her paradigms over the series and then watching her deal with it inspired a lot of sympathy (and smut.)

5. Yoruichi, Bleach. She's a cat. She kicks ass. She has awesome golden eyes. What more do you want? Plus she gets to sleep in Urahara's lap.

6. Lala Ru, Now and Then, Here and There. I've been waiting a long time for the appearance of a waterchild in a series. The spirit of all Water, in human form.

7. Fuu, Samurai Champloo. Fuu is one of the few 15-year-old anime heroines I've seen who acts her age. It is annoying that all she does for the first half of the series is get kidnapped. However. Her epiphany that she can love both of her boys without it involving a sexual aspect - that what she really wants, in the end, is to be friends with them - is a rare moment in anime.

8. Kuchiki Rukia, Bleach. I'm not liking her as much since she's spent the last 20 or so episodes penned up in the Shrine of Penitence, but her Perky Japanese Schoolgirl Front is classic (right before she beats the shit out of Ichigo again.) Ichigo wouldn't go to the gates of hell and back for someone he didn't respect, and Rukia's pretty tough (despite her current situation, grr argh.)

9. Sailor Pluto, Sailor Moon. I always preferred the Outer Senshi to the Inner Senshi, since they seemed much more mature and knowledgeable. Sailor Pluto has the unenviable position of guarding the gates of time, and that means she spends most of her time alone. Kind of a sad figure, but she has a great attack and her staff is neefty.

10. Hanajima Saki, Fruits Basket. Tohru's friends are all colorful characters, but Hana's serene arm-twisting in defense of Tohru makes her someone you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of. At the same time as she's the Goth Girl, there's a tongue-in-cheek aspect to it, like when she decorates the Sohma's bathroom in black. She's also a loyal and unwavering friend, even in the face of some jealousy over the Sohmas.

Huh. I had more trouble than I'd thought filling this out. However, a lot of the qualities that make a Japanese heroine likable to the Japanese make her uninteresting to me, like Tohru's endless politeness and her housekeeping skills. Granted, she has many fine qualities (and she almost HAS to be utterly normal, in the face of everything surrounding her) but combinations of ditzy, clumsy, and self-sacrificing don't usually make me want to be like that character.

Fuu was refreshing. So many times in anime you have to remind yourself that the characters are 15 (or 14, or 12), and it was nice to see an actual 15 year old girl onscreen without superpowers or anything like that.

Please note these are not in any sort of ranked order, just as I think of them.

1. Shayla Shayla, El-Hazard: I like the hyperactive chicks, and she's queen of 'em.

2. Lina Inverse, Slayers: I'm attracted to power, and those who wantonly abuse it. What of it?

3. Kagero, Ninja Scroll. A nice take on the stoic Japanese warrior, and the way she keeps taking blows to her pride but ultimately is treated with the respect she earns by Jubei is a wonderful, nontraditional love story.

4. Fubuki, Arcade Gamer Fubuki. Silliness at it's finest.

5. Melfina, Outlaw Star. Hell, she's naked for 90% of the series. ;) I value character development in anime a lot, and Melfina's got it in spades. Which leads me to...

6. Miaka, Fushigi Yuugi. Character development in this series rocked, and the main character is the best representative. Also along those lines,

7. Yui, Fushigi Yuugi. I love the way her character is slowly twisted against her best friend. Nakago is quite possibly THE coolest villians ever.

8. Alcione, Magic Knight Rayearth. Bumbling villianess, 'nuff said.

9. Karin Aoi, DNA^2. Another bumbling heroine, she causes the problems she's sent to cure, but she's got a couple different sides to her and this is a particularly nostaglic series for me.

10. Yawara, YAWARA! A Fashionable Judo Girl. The reluctant martial arts mistress. As a fan of anime and martial arts, this was another favorite of mine... sadly I never did see the end of it.

Yeah, this IS harder to nail down to ten than I thought it'd be. I thought I'd have trouble REACHING ten, until I started to put some thought into it.

I suppose I should have thought of this sooner, but what of characters primarily known from video games? Sure, a lot of them later got manga/series as well, but I didn't think they'd count. I could easily do a whole seperate list of them.

I'd nick this from you if I were home, it's fun XD. I'd probably share most of your list that I know, except Meryl. Certainly Fuu, Rukia and Integra. Integra's scary XD.

I'd have to put Faye Valentine on there too, and Misato from NGE. But I can imagine it would be trickier from there. I might actually surprise myself and include Kagura from Speed Grapher, that kid's really growing on me. Like Fuu, she acts like the teenager she is, but somehow manages not to nauseate me! So few kids in any show can be both realistic and likeable.
