An open offer to the l33t graphics people on my list

The Story: I work with a fellow who has his own band. He would also like to have a nice working website, and since I have some small skill with GoLive, I will be helping him with that. However, making pretty spiffy graphics is not part of my skillset, so I'm hoping someone who reads this will be interested in either trading a couple fansubs or making some cash.

Here is his site. You can see that it doesn't look very nice. He knows that.

I am looking for:

1. A header graphic for the top of the page. Should be ocean-themed. The condition: you MUST use the following picture in some way - the seagull is very important to the singer. If necessary, I can get the photo again for a better scan, but I'd rather not if it can be avoided.



2. A background, again ocean-themed, something nonintrusive.

3. Navigation buttons. This issue could go either way depending on what Al wants, so you can make me a generic button and give me a font. I know enough in PS to be able to handle that.

Any other requests can be handled as they arise, and I will compensate you appropriately. I figure that $20.00 is a fair shake, but all that is negotiable. Forget it. You give me a quote.

Caveats: I'm looking for something professional-looking here, not MS Paint. If you're interested, it might help me if you linked me to some other work you've done - LJ layouts, whatever. I'm very happy to talk about design, but I warn you that I am art-retarded.

er, hon - i do this kind of thing for a living (websites, I mean, although I'm more a backend person than front and I'm not a designer) - $20 is an insult. Better to offer no money, than that kind of thing. The graphic artists I know would charge three times that for a single image, and that would be for non-commercial, non-licensed use. If you are talking about something that might end up being their corporate image, you can add a couple of zeroes onto your 20.

Don't want to discourage you from asking, but you need to realise what the job is worth, in commercial terms. I don't turn on my laptop for twenty bucks. Sorry.

I do appreciate your candor. You have to understand that I have no experience with this kind of thing as well as no real concept of how much time it takes. Dammit Jim, I'm a chemist, not a graphic designer.

That having been said: I'm doing this as a favor for a friend, and am more after the "shits and giggles" market than the "super serious graphic art" market. People like shigure make pretty LJ layouts for jaina for a couple of burned CDs. That's the kind of thing I'm after.

Besides, "The Tide" is a bar band, not the Next Big Thing in Music - if they were looking for a recording deal instead of having fun on the weekends, I sure as shit would not be volunteering to help with the website. The one thing I can't do with that is the graphics.

I'm interested--the small amount of money's not a huge problem, since it'd probably be more useful for me to be able to have something I could show on a resume. Maybe.

Thanks so much for responding - unfortunately, jaina emailed me yesterday and we've since agreed to trade photoshopping for cosplay. It looks like you did a nice job on the sites you designed. Sorry about that. :(
