Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] jaina

Off the top of your head, right now, what ten ships would you likely drop what you're doing to read fic for? Or, alternately, what are the top ten ships that you'll give a fic a chance for, or that you've been dying to write, or that you've been dying to read... These can be new loves, old flames, or something in between. Explain if you like, but you don't have to. Then tell us 3 things these ships say about you. Leave a comment about what you think these ships say about me, then repeat in your own LJ.

Like [livejournal.com profile] jaina, I'm leaving out Vash/Meryl, because it's too obvious.

1. Jin/Shino. (obsessed much? yes.)
2. Mugen/Yatsuha. (Because for those two, breaking things = foreplay, and sex would be loud.)
2. Egon/Janine
3. Keith/Allura
4. Ichigo/Rukia
5. Ayato/Ixtli
6. Ed/Winry shut up. just shut up.
7. Jet/Faye
8. Laguna/Raine
9. Squall/Quistis
10. Kyo/Tohru

What does this say about me?

1. I like the default m/f ships, especially those with UST.
2. Grumpy couples are fun.
3. Deep inside, I'm a hopeless romantic.

And another stolen from [livejournal.com profile] jaina...

Give me a relationship (romantic or not, canon or not) from a fandom you know I'm interested in. I'll comment on it, be it cheering, explaining why I don't get it, ranting, or whatever.

I'd like to hear what you think about Squall/Quistis. :)

I'm gonna have to hang fire on this one until I can come up with something more mature than "Rinoa bugs me so I want to see Squall with Quistis." ^_^;

That's fair. Can I pick another one then? *g* What do you think of Laguna and Squall? I'm not putting a slash there because OH GOD NO NO NO. But all of my unfinished FFVIII fics involved their relationship post-game, so obviously it interests me.

Laguna and Squall... that has the potential for long and angsty fanfic. Squall has every right to be extremely unhappy with his father, from beginning to end. For leaving his mother alone. For sending him off to the orphanage when he wasn't an orphan. For putting Esthar first. For not finding him when the situation in Esthar settled down. I'd like to think that Laguna didn't know Raine was pregnant - would like to think more of his character than that - but given what an airhead he is, I just don't know. Those two are unlikely to be going on any father/son outings anytime soon.

From: [identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com
I admit that either stance could be argued, but for me, I can't believe that Laguna would knowingly let Squall be raised in an orphanage. I mean, he went to such lengths for Ellone already, and it's not like he couldn't give Squall all the child care & nannies he could want, if it was the hands-on parenting he'd want to avoid. That said, there's no reason Squall couldn't dismiss this is a bunch of bullshit--he's the one who had to deal with being alone, whether it was on purpose or not.

Damn, now I want fic.

Would, "Squall and Quistis are both complete morons, and therefore deserve one another" work for you? =P

Sorry, my soul burns eternally with hatred for Quistis.

From: [identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com
...That too.

Wherefore comes the Quistis-h8? She was the only one of the three main girls I found tolerable, except for the galloping insecurity. Selphie was too bubbly, Rinoa was too obviously set up as the Love Interest.

Date: 2005-03-29 06:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] skurtchasor.livejournal.com
For starters, I didn't find any of the characters in FFVIII (or Final Fantasy 90210, as we like to call it) to be all that likeable. Of the girls, Selphie was my least of the three evils, because I appreciate a little bit of insanity. "Are we going to blow it up with a ROCKET LAUNCHER?!?!?"

Into this mix, enter Quistis Tripe [sic]. Now if you mean galloping insecurity in the sense of the Mongol hordes storming across Russia, then we're on the same page here. Everytime Quistis whines about something, mentally add, "...and now my Daddy is gonna take away my credit cards!" at the end. It works all too well.

Aside from the one event where she guns down the spiderbot at Dollet (and fanboyz spontaneously cream themeselves), Quistis is damn worthless. Worse than worthless, in fact--at best she's a drag on the rest of the group, at worst she gets them into even more trouble with her flakiness. Consider the assassination attempt on Edea. Quistis: "Although the FATE OF THE WORLD depends upon the critical timing needed to pull off this mission, I had better abandon my post and go APOLOGIZE TO RINOA because she might be upset! In fact, apologizing to Rinoa is so important that....why did the door lock?!?!? If my Daddy hears about this, he'll take away my credit cards!"

It makes you wonder why an elite paramilitary force like SeeD would entrust someone like Quistis to be an instructor in the first place. I'd have said she slept her into the position (har har), but I think she's too vapid even for something so simple. Credit for firing her, though.

Date: 2005-03-29 07:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com
Honestly, why SeeD would trust the fate of the world to a gaggle of teenagers is beyond me, no matter who the teenagers are.

Regarding Quistis and the apology: I'd have to wonder about the cultural context there. The Japanese place an incredible value on politeness, and I'm sure that Quistis's need to go back and apologize says something very positive about her character in that regard. To Americans, who do not apologize for things to nearly the same degree, her apology becomes more of a WTF moment.

She was actually one of my stronger characters, to tell the truth. ^_^; I kinda felt sorry for her, because I can identify with feeling insecure.

From: [identity profile] skurtchasor.livejournal.com
An interesting point there. I suppose Quistis is "polite to a fault," which would explain also explain why she can't control her classroom (being a university professor, I have experience with this phenomenon). And to tell you the truth, I wasn't thinking about Japanese cultural context during that part of the game, I was thinking that it was a rather contrived way to advance the plot.

Still, I can think of overpolite characters that I can appreciate--Yuna in FFX (at least earlier in the game), and Belldandy in Oh! My Goddess (though I'll never admit to that in public). So I guess it's something else that keeps the soul burning with Quistis.

I ended up liking Yuna a lot by the end of FFX, because I felt that the relationship-building that went on with Tidus was a lot more realistic than, oh, Rinoa and Squall (Disc 1: "I hate you, Rinoa!" Disce 2: "I hate you, Rinoa!" Disc 3: "I hate you, Rinoa!" Disc 4: "I love you, Rinoa!") Unfortunately, FFX-2 was not a worthy sequel - it took what maturity Yuna had gained during FFX and replaced it with Charlie's Angels. Color me unimpressed.

What say you on Spike/Faye?

>^..^

Date: 2005-03-27 05:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com
They don't work for me, not at all. Faye appears to have a thing for Spike, but aside from Spike being hung up on Julia, his whole attitude is one of a person who is living on borrowed time. Spike says from the start that he can't stand animals, women, or kids, and his attitude towards all three doesn't stray too far from tolerance over the course of the series. He's friendly-ish with Faye, but I'd have a hard time calling them friends in any sense other than one getting the other's back from time to time. So, a pairing is hard to envision, at least to me.

Could you please explain Rukia/Ichigo to me? I'm pretty sure my dislike of the whole 'ship has to do with the fact I just really don't care for Ichigo as a character.

I have to preface this by saying that I haven't seen past ep 10, so a lot can change. As I said, I like grumpy couples, and Ichigo/Rukia would be the grumpiest. I'm not even sure I like them as a sexual pairing either - it's more a friendship thing. There's something about the "you piss me off all the time, but I'm really quite fond of you" dynamic that makes me go all "Awwwwwww" and Ichigo/Rukia definitely qualifies.

I love the many ways Ichigo has to get bonked on the head to get down with his Death God-fu. No, this has nothing to do with the ship, I just felt like saying it.

Ah, so you haven't managed to get to Renji yet, huh? I'm more with Renji/Rukia, but, like you, in more of a friendship manner. Devoted friendship.

I haven't watched any of the Bleach anime. I'm so far ahead in the manga, I don't know if I should take the time to do so, since there's stuff I haven't watched at all. Like the rest of GITS: SAC and Paranoia Agent.

You know where I could get ahold of MP3s for the opening and ending themes?

From Bleach 7 (www.bleach7.com). That's where I got them. Alternatively, I can IM/email them to you.

*points to list of pairings* Notice, no m/m. This has nothing to do with "oh ew yuck boysex" but has more to do with a man who is interested in another man is not going to be interested in me, and I like to live vicariously. Thanks for the rec, tho. ^_^;

You're welcome. You'll want to be very cautious about spoilers, though. Some people aren't as considerate as others, though for the most part I've found LJ communities to be much better checks on spoilers in fic summaries than someplace like ff.net, WHICH YOU CANNOT VISIT UNTIL YOU FINISH THE WHOLE SHOW.

I'm not really a slash fan either. I like it occasionally with very specific pairings, but that's most often the pairings farthest imaginable from canon (hense this icon). For the most part, slash just...doesn't interest me.

Heh, understood. I think just to be on the safe side that I'll be avoiding all FMA fic until I'm done. Better than finding something out and then deciding it's not worth it to watch the rest.

"Ship" would be a very strong word. I like the idea of them as a couple, that's more accurate. There's something sweet about falling for your best pal when you were a kid. Annoying and immature? Show me a teenager who isn't. Ed does need a couple hard smacks upside the head before he'd be reasonably tolerable, tho.
