Because I'm still having trouble believing it happened, I must relate what happened yesterday in the Wegman's (supermarket) parking lot.

I had finished shopping and went up the wrong parking aisle with my cart, so I had to cut over one. On the way, I picked up another shopping cart because it was blocking my way and there was no other way to get rid of it. My car was parked maybe 8-10 cars out from the front - not a great spot, not a bad spot. At that time of day, the lots aren't very populated, and there were a lot of spaces open about 5-7 cars down from mine.

The vultures usually swarm for the spaces up front, so I didn't pay any attention to the white minivan waiting with its blinker on behind my car. My space was hardly worth waiting for, and besides, there were spots about ten feet away from it. It took me a couple minutes to get the groceries into the car, take the candy out of the bag so I could munch it on the way home, and wrestle both wagons into the corral.

The white minivan remained in place (and remember, this is four or five minutes) the whole time.

On the way back to my car, I realize that this idiot woman in her white minivan is waiting for MY SPOT.

Never mind that it's not a primo spot.

Never mind that she could have WALKED TO THE STORE AND BACK about ten times in the time it took from "intention of leaving" to "actually get in car and start it."

Never mind that there were spaces about ten feet from my car.

No, she wanted my spot so badly that she SAT THERE for five minutes, waiting for me to leave.

Are people really that goddamn lazy? I'm still having trouble with this.

A random act of patience?

Maybe, but if it was an act of patience, it was patience to the point of absurdity.

I also hate parking-lot vultures. It drives me nuts.

Yes. Yes, they are.

I was afraid you'd say that... *sigh*

Just theorizing, but maybe she started the wait, then got preoccupied with something mentally or physically (I've seen people balance their checkbooks at traffic lights), and just didn't notice the passage of time, or was content to wait? I've heard that some ADD folks can distract themselves with so many different mental channels, or, alternatively, get so focused on one task that they really don't notice time passing.

It's time for us all to admit that people, in general, are idiots.

I came to that conclusion a long time ago. The hard part is realizing that sometimes I too am an idiot.

Well sure, we're all capable of being absolute idiots. But some are... so much more freely capable than others.

People are that lazy and it irritates me too. Personally I try and find the first available spot, the first one I come to, and just park there. The walk is always good for you and if we come out with something heavy or lots of packages I can always go get the car then. The only time I circle the lot is if there are NO parking spaces available.
