New pic and other ramblings
Aug. 30th, 2001 05:12 pmI am sure that Michael Whelan would have a hairy cat fit if he saw that I stole his artwork for my LJ. Oh well! The pic is from the cover art for The Tree of Swords and Jewels by C. J. Cherryh, and the woman is my namesake Arafel. Whelan is so talented. It's a damned shame that he decided to stop doing cover art, because he was a rare breed who actually READ the book and paid very careful attention to the details in order to have his cover accurately reflect the story. It's not like Rowena's cover for Dragonsong, where Menolly's nine fire-lizards have hind legs only, and it is clearly stated in the book that the fire-lizards have six limbs - front legs, back legs, and wings. Talk about not paying attention.
I also respect Whelan a lot for the following: on the cover he did for Dragonflight, the powers-that-be wanted the heroine Lessa a-dragonback in a diaphanous white gown on, up there in the stratosphere. Whelan said "no" and gave her nice, warm, lined leathers. :)
Well anyway. Just got back from the gym; I've been going with the new postdoc Melanie. It's a lot more fun to go there with a friend; those 25 min on the stairstepper go a lot faster when you're chatting with someone.
Guess I share the boring life *wink* with LordRaziel; the most exciting thing for me all week was going to the beach last Sunday. We might go see "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" over the weekend, but other than that, no Labor Day plans, no barbecues, no parties. *sigh* Boat's out of the water with numerous problems. Well, maybe next year. :)

Thanks for the link--got the pic! Now I'm an accessory to the crime. =P
