Mar. 7th, 2002 12:44 pmGot an email from the graduate director that if I want to continue my appointment here at Princeton past September, I have to have a first draft of my thesis in hand by September. 2002.
Good Lord.
Nothing like a swift kick in the ass... get ready to ride the rails, Arafel... O_O
Guess this puts a term limit on how long I can poke around here. Which, all things considered, might not be a bad thing.

Date: 2002-03-07 10:06 am (UTC)How many more experiments to go before you can start writing? (Or can you start now?)

Date: 2002-03-07 12:30 pm (UTC)That was certainly a decisive dead line...
I hope you can do it, I have a feeling you've got enough material to put in there, it's "just" the write up which is missing. You may not need more than 3-4 months to write a first draft and that means you have some more months to complete the experiments, but that certainly was a tight limit given you pretty suddenly.

Date: 2002-03-07 02:11 pm (UTC)Yeah - and this is a "new policy." Guess whose class gets to be on the "surprise!" end of things. Used to be you just sort of picked up your sixth year and ran with it.
Experiments: I'll have to run a bunch of oxidations and hope they give me results. Otherwise, I'm totally sunk.
How come it is that you're the catalyst for these happenings? One of the last times we chatted, we talked about going to conferences, and a few days later the GRC came along. Last night it was theses, and now I get the news. ^_^
Best of luck with your own writing.

Date: 2002-03-07 02:12 pm (UTC)I don't know when the final draft would be due. I think the idea is to make sure that the students who are continuing are actually getting ready to graduate before they are granted an extension. Pretty smart, to be fair.

Date: 2002-03-07 02:41 pm (UTC)Hope you can get those experiments done as soon as possible, and they goes as you expect, so you can get that thesis going. Do you have an idea of what theme/idea you will use for the thesis?

Date: 2002-03-07 04:29 pm (UTC)D'oh!! (Not to mention that I had to teach last fall, and then suddenly you were asked to teach). Maybe we should start talking about happier things like vacations and coming into large sums of money. :)
I really do know how you feel. I understand the panic, and how overwhelming it all seems... there is so much shit to do to finish a PhD. But, you can do it!! Just start chipping away at it. Use the fear to fuel activity related to your thesis... anything you do right now will be a monumental help later. (For example, you could start writing your intro now. I had written a review, so mine was covered, but I've heard that this is usually the biggest pain in the ass of all the thesis chapters.)
Anyway, hang in there... I'm always here to lend an ear, a shoulder, or even a hand, if I can. I'm feeling the fire under my hinder these days, too, so maybe we can help keep each other motivated. :)
