Got an email from the graduate director that if I want to continue my appointment here at Princeton past September, I have to have a first draft of my thesis in hand by September. 2002.

Good Lord.

Nothing like a swift kick in the ass... get ready to ride the rails, Arafel... O_O

Guess this puts a term limit on how long I can poke around here. Which, all things considered, might not be a bad thing.

*tries to stave off impending heart attack*

Nothing like a clear cut deadline, and the stress of trying to meet it, to give you the motivation to get things done! lol I hope things go well with you in writing it! Any idea on what you are doing it on?

Sounds like this pain in your ass will end sooner than you thought! They don't screw around in your department, do they? Wowie.

How many more experiments to go before you can start writing? (Or can you start now?)

So what all does a thesis involve? When would the final draft be required to be done? End of next year? Perhaps buying people some jade--I don't know, anyone (no one in particular) might bring you the good luck you need to finish it. =P

Ano... Good luck with that. I'm sure it will be a lot of work...

Good luck, Arafel! I'm sure your thesis will be great.

Oh, and if you do get a heard attack, take some of these *hands Arafel some Bayer Aspirin.* They can save your life during a heart attack!

That was certainly a decisive dead line...

I hope you can do it, I have a feeling you've got enough material to put in there, it's "just" the write up which is missing. You may not need more than 3-4 months to write a first draft and that means you have some more months to complete the experiments, but that certainly was a tight limit given you pretty suddenly.

I'm supposed to be doing it on asymmetric manganese(V) based catalysts. Motivation - that would be one term. Stark raving terror would be another. Thanks for the support though. :)

You probably understand this Moment of Panic better than just about anyone else. And ain't it a pisser to teach while it's going on.

Yeah - and this is a "new policy." Guess whose class gets to be on the "surprise!" end of things. Used to be you just sort of picked up your sixth year and ran with it.

Experiments: I'll have to run a bunch of oxidations and hope they give me results. Otherwise, I'm totally sunk.

How come it is that you're the catalyst for these happenings? One of the last times we chatted, we talked about going to conferences, and a few days later the GRC came along. Last night it was theses, and now I get the news. ^_^

Best of luck with your own writing.

You're still not getting a piece of jade. Sweet talk and subliminals will not avail you.

I don't know when the final draft would be due. I think the idea is to make sure that the students who are continuing are actually getting ready to graduate before they are granted an extension. Pretty smart, to be fair.

*takes aspirin* Thanks, I think I'm going to need a lot of this.

I have a lot more experiments to run. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

Foiled again.

Hope you can get those experiments done as soon as possible, and they goes as you expect, so you can get that thesis going. Do you have an idea of what theme/idea you will use for the thesis?

>>How come it is that you're the catalyst for these happenings?

D'oh!! (Not to mention that I had to teach last fall, and then suddenly you were asked to teach). Maybe we should start talking about happier things like vacations and coming into large sums of money. :)

I really do know how you feel. I understand the panic, and how overwhelming it all seems... there is so much shit to do to finish a PhD. But, you can do it!! Just start chipping away at it. Use the fear to fuel activity related to your thesis... anything you do right now will be a monumental help later. (For example, you could start writing your intro now. I had written a review, so mine was covered, but I've heard that this is usually the biggest pain in the ass of all the thesis chapters.)

Anyway, hang in there... I'm always here to lend an ear, a shoulder, or even a hand, if I can. I'm feeling the fire under my hinder these days, too, so maybe we can help keep each other motivated. :)
