Final Fantasy meme, Days 13, 14, 15

There's one I've never honestly thought about. I like FFX's Cid because he was a good uncle and very protective of Yuna, but I probably got the most use out of FFVII's Cid Highwind. Plus he is loud and profane, and I tend to enjoy those types of people in video games. Real life, maybe not so much, but who doesn't like a goddamn cup of tea?


You're all probably expecting me to say Laguna, and yes, he is up there. What keeps him from being #1 is that 1. he really is an idiot and 2. I'm not too happy about the choices he makes after Winhill. That having been said, I've put the poor guy through his paces *cough* so we don't have any secrets left, and I haven't considered any other character's state of mind as closely as his.

In general, I tend to like the older characters in general, because I am so far off the high school age that the kiddies don't appeal to me any more. Any time there is a character who's roughly my age, it cheers me up and makes me feel less like an old fart (Basch still has a year on me! Yes!) As far as male characters go, though, my favorite is Balthier - because Balthier is Han Solo with a sexy accent. He starts out as a sky pirate, plundering for profit and amusement, but once he gets drawn into Ashe's cause, he's in it to win it. (As an aside, here is a good spot for me to rec one of mullenkamp's excellent fics. After the Phon Coast scene, I had a soft spot for the Balthier/Ashe pairing, and her fic Being a Bunansa is so well done that I can't see it happening any other way.) Balthier tried to be a good little Ffamran as a youngster, but he saw his father going crazy from his involvement with the Occuria, and he spends a good portion of the storyline making his peace with his past. Vaan might have been the nominal hero, and he's the Everyman through whom we see the events unfold, but Balthier is the leading man.

In a more recent vein, I'm currently working (slowly) through FFXIII, and I'm finding that I really, really like Sazh. Sazh is someone I could definitely get along with - he seems to be very pragmatic. I'm not too far into the game but I like the "ohmygod you kids, what now" feeling I get from him - he's the older guy who has been there, done that, and he's caught up with these idealistic children who seem determined to make him suffer. Plus he has a chocobo chick in his 'fro. I could go drinking with Laguna, no problem. But I'd enjoy being friends with Sazh.



When it comes to the ladies, I'm all about the chicks with awesome swords. Some of my annoyance probably has a cultural basis - maybe there are social mores in Japan that say if you're a girl you can be strong only if you are also nonthreatening at the same time. That really gets up my nose. Still, please, spare me from the "I'm so weak but I have to protect everybody!!!!!!" girls who seem to permeate FF games. Even worse are petulant whiners like Rinoa (sorry, Rinoa fans, I really am.) Poor Quistis - she pours her heart out to Squall, then sees him fall for this pushy airhead and has to settle for the cliche of "I didn't really love you, I just had big sisterly feelings for you I didn't understand" to save her dignity. And then everyone pairs her up with Seifer by default. Maybe she and Yuki Sohma should get together and go drinking. And the GENKI GENKI GENKI girls... ugh. Vanille, I'm looking at you.

Lightning is probably my ideal leading lady - she's tough, she's smart, and she takes no crap from anyone. And, something tells me that I'm going to like Fang. I don't know her, though, so I can't make her a favorite. I respect Yuna a great deal except in FFX-2. I remember liking Celes a lot when I was playing FFVI. If you go for swordswinging women who can dish it out with the best of the tanks, Agrias and Meliadoul are unbeatable.

I have to spare a thought also for Raine, because the poor girl got such a raw deal. Not only does her family get busted up, she has to go through a pregnancy alone, and she never sees her husband again. Jeez, Square, when it rains it pours, doesn't it?

My husband's favorite FF girl is Tifa because she has huge tracts of land. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
