Final Fantasy VIII

I could get into a massive overpersonalized rant about how Laguna is a gigantic wanker for never going back home to his wife, but I won't. But he is.

Instead: Triple Triad.

I am not a big fan of the FF minigames, because invariably I suck at them. So I didn't play much Triple Triad. The downside is that you can't get the best items unless you play the game, and if you don't have a stockpile of Hero and Holy War items, you will never beat Ultima Weapon in a thousand playthroughs. Where do you get those items? By converting high-level cards (the Seifer card was one of them, IIRC.) Never got that particular feather in my cap, so to speak.

Also, the whole Time Compression thing didn't hang together very well. I don't entirely understand how the FFVIII world wasn't caught in a paradoxical loop after Ultimecia was defeated, but maybe I need a flowchart and very small words. I mean, I can wave my hands in the air and talk around things with the best of them, but I was still going "bzuh?" at how the whole premise was presented. Thank goodness for the wiki.

(Then again, FF plots have been convoluted at the best of times. I've read over the premise behind Dissidia at least a dozen times, and I don't get it, and my conclusion is that they should not have bothered giving this game a story. If you're going to have a Tekken-like brawler, give it a Tekken-like plot, which is to say let the characters beat the snot out of one another for no good reason and then a little fun movie at the end. But I digress.)

Final Fantasy X

Blitzball. Honestly, Square, if I want to play Madden (or NCAA football or whatever) I will buy it. Poor old Wakka ended up warming the bench by the end of the game because all his upgrades were only available if you played.

Final Fantasy XII

No minigames in this one, and the hunts were fun. But, I couldn't beat Zeromus no matter how hard I tried.




I liked the chocobos in Final Fantasy Tactics: WoL. The red and black ones were useful and could be poached for good items. They were also quite prolific at laying eggs, so if you weren't careful, they'd fill up your party and then you'd have to send them packing. Conversely, fighting them could be a bitch. I always wanted to write a vignette about Ramza and his troupe straggling along to god-knows-where, and Boko has laid yet another egg, and what are we going to do about this one, crew? (Scrambled eggs, anyone? Tastes lke chicken!)
