We translated this in Irish class last Thursday...

Rinneadh Aisling Dúinn

I ndorchadact an éadóchais rinneadh aisling dúinn. Lasamar solas an dóchais. Agus níor múchadh é. I bhfásach an lagmhisnigh rinneadh aisling dúinn. Chuireamar cran na crógachta. Agus tháinig bláth air.

I ngeimhreadh na daoirse rinneadh aisling dúinn. Mheileamar sneachta na táimhe. Agus rith abhainn na athbeochana as.

Chuireamar ár n-aisling ag snámh mar eala ar an abhainn. Rinneadh firinne den aisling. Rinneadh samhradh den gheimhreadh. Rinneadh saoirse den daoirse. Agus d'fhágamar agaibhse mar oidreacht í.

A ghlúnta na saoirse cuimhnígí orainne. Glúnta na haislinge…

Literally translated:

A Vision Made for Us

In the darkness of despair, a vision was made for us. We lit the light of hope. And it has not been smothered. In the desert of low-spiritedness, a vision was made for us. We planted a tree of bravery. And a blossom came on it.

In the winter of slavery, a vision was made for us. We melted the snow of lethargy. And a river of revival ran out of it.

We put our dream to swim like a swan on the river. Truth was made from the vision. Summer was made from winter. Freedom was made from slavery. And we left it to you as a legacy.

Generations of freedom, remember us. Generations of the vision...

This translation is very literal. It concerns the Rising, an attempt by the Irish to throw off British rule. It started and ended badly, as most of the leaders of the Rising were executed by the British for their role, but it did start the chain of events that led to the division of Ireland.

I posted this because I think some of the language is so lovely. Especially the sentence "We put our dream to swim like a swan on the river." This was a delight to translate, and it's very gratifying that I finally know enough Irish to read this with the help of a dictionary for grammar!
