As threatened, I finished Harry Potter.

That killed me. That book fucking killed me.

Overall impressions: This book had it all over OotP, as Rowling appeared to know what story she was telling this time. I found OotP to be a tedious read, as the good bits were interspersed with bucketloads of filler, especially with endless go-rounds about Harry's crush on Cho. HBP was much more tightly written, and IMO, on a level with PoA.

Storywise: I will have to refer to [livejournal.com profile] fadingembers's commentary when I say: I do not cry at books. Never never never. But - in the one, rarest exception - there were tears imminent at the end of HBP, and only the fear that my husband would walk in on me reading and find me crying at a book kept me from turning on the waterworks full force. (not that he'd laugh at me; on the contrary, he'd offer hugs and love, and that would make me cry MORE.)

Rowling has set up for an ending that's on a par with the His Dark Materials trilogy in terms of bittersweetness - no gain without loss, as it were. The end of HBP was highly reminiscent of the end of Spider-man, with Harry recognizing that his friends and his loves can and will be used against him. I can't help but spare a measure of sympathy, however small, for Draco; he's in over his head and might prove a weak link in the Death Eaters' chain when the time comes.

And poor Dumbledore. How unutterably sad to see him betrayed by Snape. I, along with every other HP fan out there, believed along with Dumbledore that Snape must eventually show some redeeming quality, and yet he didn't appear to. Rowling may have a Star Wars-esque trick up her sleeve there eventually (perhaps Snape will throw Voldemort down a pit, with lightning spewing from Voldemort's fingertips?) but things look quite bleak.

And can I say that I fully expected the Half-Blood Prince to be Tom Riddle? (and might there not be something interesting in that Snape appeared to know that Harry had his book for some time? hm.)

My mind reels at the thought of the lines around the block for the last installment.

As for Remus and Tonks - that did feel pastede on yey, but I am laughing my ass off at the Remus/Sirius fallout. Watching an entire fandom go ballistic is always entertaining.
