WTF X 2

1. WTF is up with the rash of "bisexual virgins/celibates" I've been seeing around? It seems... a bit of an oxymoron to me.

2. Trinity Blood got licensed, which is annoying. It's not a series I'd pay to see, and that's the problem. Generally, even if a series is licensed, the subbers will continue to release new eps through their site or through IRC, but Anime-Empire is stopping the project. WTF.

1. Who? Guess I'm a bit out of the loop. But then, I never paid much mind to biseexual virgins.

2. Yeah, Anime-Empire is one of the "honorable" fansubbers.

That's pretty much my reaction too. The series is...ok, but I'm 8 episodes in and still nothing has really happened. It's too bad, really, because it has potential but is severly lacking in plot.

1. I'm not so much flabbergasted by "Bisexual virgin" because well, if one's a virgin, one's a virgin. Some people either can't or won't change that, even if they're sure about their sexual orientation. "Bisexual celibate" seems like the oxymoron to me because if you're not having sex, you're not having sex. What's the point of specifying to what gender(s) you're attracted if you're not acting on your attraction? That's like saying you're a "carnivorous anorexic." Celibacy always seemed like a conscious choice to me, so anyone identifying themselves as a celibate and prefacing it with what gender they'd fuck if they did have sex is either so full of self-loathing they desire to taunt themselves, or is a virgin who can't get sex at the moment, but rather than admit that like an adult, whips out "I just don't WANT to do it!"

Plus, it's the internet. We're all deviants here, one way or another.

2. Uh, I'd feel your pain if I knew the series. Plus, neat icon.

I'd consider myself a celibate bisexual. I'm attracted to both, but have a few trust issues at the moment that prevents me from getting too deeply into a relationship. However, I don't have sex with someone unless I *am* deeply involved with someone, emotionally. Hence the celibacy.

Some of the fansub groups (like Anime Keep, Lunar, Solar) will drop projects after they get licensed.

Other groups (like AnimeOne and Honobono) will continue to release the series until it is done. Actually...to be fair...Honobono is continuing to do a series that will probably NEVER be seen in its original form on the shelves of US stores (Tokyo Mew Mew).

And then you have groups like A4E and Anime-Etc who only do DVD rips of American releases.

1. This is only logical when it's involuntary celibacy because people turning down sex on principle confuses me mightily, an' I feel their pain.

2. Never heard of it, but the title sounds promising. What's the premise?

Whether you're screwing someone right now or not doesn't change your inclinations. I've always thought voluntary celibacy to be one hell of a weird lifestyle choice, but people have their reasons for doing it, I suppose.

If you're in a monogamous relationship, should that stop you describing yourself as bisexual? You like who you like, and you look when you look, and the fact that you're not going to act on it doesn't change that. Bisexual celibate just takes that a step further since you're not currently having sex with either gender.

1) I would be one of these people in question, though that's not exactly the label I like to put on it. I tell people that I am Angrybee-sexual (what Angrybee finds sexy may change from moment to moment!), and currently, Angrybee is not interested in people-sex. (Just word-sex. Words having affairs with other words, man.) But, I do consider myself bisexual, not so much for current acts, as for acts occuring over the last decade-and-a-half of my life.

I wonder whether there's a correlation between the voluntary celibacy and asexuality. There are some folks who just ain't interested in having sex, and not because of traumatic events such as rape or abuse. It doesn't mean that they never masturbate or enjoy porn or get turned on by things, they're just not interested enough to consummate with another person.

Speaking of bisexuality, there was an article in the New York Times about how men do not appear to show a true bisexual response, but women do. Definitely a study to take with a grain of salt, but interesting nonetheless.

1. See comment to Tiggy above re: asexuality. Me, I tend to feel that if you're voluntarily celibate, you're celibate, and you ought to drop the qualifiers.

2. Alternate Earth is invaded by beings described as vampires, and humanity is locked in a power struggle with them. Vatican fights vampire Empire, Rozenkreuz Order wants to start war between Empire and Vatican. Enter Secret Weapon Abel Nightroad, who (as mentioned previously) is the bastard child of Vash and Alucard. Bumbling Vashy non-killing dork by day; bitchin' scary bloodsucker upon power release.

I can dig that. ([livejournal.com profile] tenshi_no_korin once said something similar to the "Angrybee-sexual" label. To me, though, "celibacy" carries the connotation of "will never have sex with anyone, ever," like a Catholic priest (er... theoretically.) If someone were choosing not to have sex at the present time for whatever reason, the word I would choose would be "abstinent." However, I'm perfectly willing to accede the whole thing to semantics. ^_^

I'm crossing my fingers that no one licenses Bleach soon, but at least there's a second set of subbers who are releasing.

I kinda typed this out already to [livejournal.com profile] angrybee, but the question is worth asking: how do you define celibacy? Would you refuse to have sex with someone even if all other conditions of rightness were met? What difference would you draw between abstinence and celibacy? See, now I'm all interested and stuff. :)

I have no clue at all, since my experiences with celibacy were always the entirely involuntary kind!

Was that the study where they showed men and women of various orientations different kinds of porn and monitored arousal in areas of the brain? That one seemed to show that women find erotica arousing irrespective of the gender of those involved, whereas guys like what they like.

Celibacy to me implies fairly long term intentions, but not necessarily permanent. A small number of people still choose celibacy until marriage, and I wouldn't consider that an oxymoron.

Yes, that's the study. Not to put any metamessages on the results, but in a nutshell, it showed that the majority of self-identified bisexual men who participated in the study and responded to erotica at all were aroused exclusively by m/m erotica and not by f/f erotica. Interesting that women could be more flexible that way.
