*yawn* I could have used another day off, you bet.

Joy and wonder, we had a weekend where we didn't have to visit any family! It's so nice when that happens!

Despite my best efforts to stay in on Saturday and snooze, husband and I went out for a drive to Rutgers, specifically to the Cook Botanical Gardens. It was a special time to go, since approximately eleven years prior, a scruffy floppy-haired engineer with the most beat-ass car you ever saw showed up at Bunting-Cobb dorm to take a young, self-absorbed bleached-blonde out for a study break. They made it as far as a nice sitting-rock by a stream in the Cook gardens, and then talked for about three hours. The rest, as they say, is history.

This time, we walked through some of the nature trails and scrambled down to the banks of the Raritan. On our way out, we saw three bridal parties having photos taken, and there was an outdoor wedding reception at the Log Cabin. Nice day for it - May can be so mercurial in its weather!

Sunday was our busy day out of the two. Husband and I had both registered for the Midland Run, which is a large fitness/fundraising event that takes place very nearby where we live. Husband has already run two 5K races and one 5 mile, but this was my first go at it. I've only been running steadily for about a month and a half, but I'd done the distance twice without dropping dead. It was an enormous event, and we were glad we could walk there. We picked up our number bibs and a computer chip that logs you when you finish - kind of like EZPass, I guess.

Husband had ants in his pants as usual to get to the race on time, but we still had to wait about half an hour to line up even after picking up our race stuff and making a leisurely lap of the grounds. I wore my spiffity new armband for my MP3 player, and it was kind of cool to see all the different MP3 players people had. I loaded up my workout playlist (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] angstymcgoth for the goth/techno that starts me off!) and soon enough they had us running.

The course kicked my ass. I usually run on a treadmill or on asphalt, and this was over grass and gravel in parts. Towards the end, I had no shame and walked up a couple of hills. Even with that, it took 35:36 to finish, which is about what I'd done in my trial runs. Me, it was a big day just to finish! At the end, husband was waiting for me by the finish, cheering his brains out for me. He didn't do as well as he'd hoped, but it was a very tough course.

Afterwards, we were disappointed to see that there didn't appear to be a food tent for the runners. Then, the woman we picked up our goody bag from pointed out the tent, which was out in god's country behind the moon bounce for the kids. While I can understand that the Midland School wants to fundraise by selling food, I didn't appreciate that the food for the runners was somewhat hidden.

All in all, it was a good experience, and I'll definitely do it again. It's too bad that the Sheehan Classic in Red Bank is a 5-mile, because it would be fun to finish the race and then immediately jump into the marina pool. I don't think I'm quite up for that length yet, and it's only a month off. Not such a great goody bag - the Safe Date race that husband did last Oct. by far had the best swag. You'd think that a race sponsored by J&J would have some free Band-Aids to hand out, or something.

After that, we snoozed on the couch for a while and then went out to get some snazzy sneakers for the Montreal GP. With all the walking we did last year, stylish but comfy shoes are key. Husband isn't quite sold on the shoes he got, but I keep reassuring him that I think they're cool.

Next weekend: boat!
