Jan. 2nd, 2005 04:56 pmHappy New Year, everyone.
As usual, we had a nice quiet New Year's spent getting tipsy with friends - good food, good company, and everyone hit the sack by 12:30 because we're all old farts. I did get a very cheerful voice mail from
fadingembers and
jaina from their party out in NYC. Yesterday we all nursed headaches while husband and his friend ran the 5-mile Hamilton Hangover. Afterwards, there was some getting lost on NJ back roads, discoveries that gas stations in boondock towns aren't open on New Year's, and finally a return home to catch up on sleep debt.
I've had a lazy day capped by snoozing on husband while he watched Le Mans. Will have to do some more sewing later, but because it's now 2005 and I feel justified recapping now, here's that "What did you do last year" meme that everyone else did three weeks ago.
1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Went to a Formula One race.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I've given up on that sort of thing. I know myself too well.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My cousin Annette had another one.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandfather died in March, and my dear friend's mother died last week.
5. What countries did you visit?
Canada!
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
A house. Not even a house, necessarily - even somewhere to live that we haven't so obviously outgrown would be a major improvement over the terminal clutter.
7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
April 27th, because I finally FINISHED THE GODDAMN PHD, YAY.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
See above.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I didn't speak to my grandfather when he called to talk to my husband three days before he died. I was running around the house not really paying attention. I regret that, so much.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Aside from getting the flu, no.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I've lost track of everything I bought last year, but I was very pleased with getting a Utena ring.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
There's a snark answer to this that I'll leave unsaid.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Someone at work. He got his, though. You can only lie for so long before it catches up with you.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Aside from food and car insurance, I spent a lot of money on anime shit. Yeah.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Formula One race. It was awesome! The whole city partied for four days straight. It was like going to the Giants playoff game that one time for sheer sports party-ness, only it started on a pit walkthrough on Thursday and didn't quit until we left on Monday after the race.
16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but I am not at all familiar with current music.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier. I'm done with the thesis. I can spend an entire evening sewing without guilt.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter. Weight Watchers will be getting my money again in 2005...
iii. richer or poorer? Richer, after the promised offer was drawn up.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I'd been better about keeping up with friends. It's so easy to let people slip away, and then it gets more and more uncomfortable to get back in touch with them.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Ate crap that was bad for me, because now I have to diet/exercise it off. >_<
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Spent Christmas with my parents and inlaws.
(where did 21 go?)
Beats me.
22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
I'm already in love with my husband. I fell in love with Samurai Champloo, does that count?
23. How many one-night stands?
Eh, I'm too afraid of getting a disease or getting preggo to do that. Plus, married. Small detail.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Pimp My Ride. I love that show.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I only hate one person, and it's no one anyone reading this post would know about.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I'm kind of depressed to admit it, but I didn't discover any new groups.
27. What was the best book you read?
It took me forever to get through, but "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" was a great read.
28. What did you want and get?
A serger and a new digital camera.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Incredibles!
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 29 on my last birthday, and I spent it with my parents and husband. We went out to dinner and had presents.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If Kerry had won, because then it would have kept me from having to listen to my family and my inlaws talk about how great it was that Bush won.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Coziness/former grad student goes to work.
34. What kept you sane?
Husband. Getting that license to bitch.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Rubens Barrichello, the other Ferrari driver. He loves his wife, he loves his kid, he says so all the time, and he's a happy smiley guy. I like seeing once in a while that having money and power and a swell job doesn't have to make one into an intolerable attention whore.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
That sticker concerning the teaching of evolution in schools. It upsets me to see factual information being deliberately subverted because people want to take their creation myth and make it a recognized "science," where the Adam-and-Eve story isn't any different from the birth of the Greek gods. Both stories are the effort of an early people to describe the creation of their world in the absence of any technology or knowledge of the universe. Yet, in this country, there are an alarming number of people who take the fairy tale as fact based on their belief, and then attempt to give it some kind of credence.
What's scary is that this kind of nonsense is getting stronger. See also the "conscience clause" and "stem cell research."
37. Who did you miss?
I miss Stephanie and I miss my grandfather.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I met a lot of great people and I have to choose one? Nah.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
People are now, and will always be, stupid.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
The spine is bound to last a life
Tough enough to take a pounding
Pages made of days of open hand...
(Suzanne Vega, Book of Dreams)
