For whatever reason, I haven't had a heck of a lot to say recently. S'pose it's better just to shut up than to blather on about nothing.

Things have been pretty much okay. Ankona and I are working on some new separations (which reminds me that I must sign up for the HPLC for a couple days... AIM anyone? It's the sole source of entertainment with separation after separation... bleh.) But it's a little progress, perhaps.

We visited the family over the weekend for Easter. Nothing special doing at the Q's, just yard work. Steve's bro finally proposed to his longtime g/f and they think they're getting married in Sept. Things are already a mess with the preparations; too many chiefs and not enough Indians, plus brother doesn't bother communicating important info to his fiancee. As long as I'm not involved.

We saw my family on Sunday; first the rest of the M family and then the H's. My grandparents are really showing their age; it's a little disturbing to me... I always thought of my grandpa as an older version of my dad, and I guess it's a reminder that my parents are getting older too. My father's bro was being a pain in the ass. He is so mean to his wife sometimes and he thinks it's funny. He must have dressed her down about bringing a new cat home from the ASPCA five times while I was there, and MS or not, I was ready to smack him in the head. He also went on and on about naming the new kitty Grant; he's a Civil War buff and they have already named their other new cat Sherman. His poor wife gets no reinforcement that her ideas are valid too, and it makes me so mad.

My cousin Sam is developing into a real brat. Like father, like son. He's allowed to slam on his sisters with no repercussions.

Dinner with the H's was much nicer. Some cousins and aunts and uncles were there, and my cousin Chris called in from Colorado. It was the first time I'd spoken with him in a long time; he's hard to reach. He seems to be doing well tho he is very busy learning new things.

That about sums up Easter weekend.

Did hear a short news piece on NPR about marshmallow Peeps. (For those of you who do not know what a Peep is, it's a little marshmallow animal, either a bunny or a chick, covered in colored sugar.) It was terrific. When I tuned in, they were discussing that next year's Peeps are made now b/c they have a shelf life of 18 months. The reporter talked about having a freshly-made Peep and how you could replicate the condition by putting one in the microwave and heating it for 10-15 seconds and no more - "unless you want it to explode," said the reporter, at which I cheered. I have done the "what happens when you put a Peep in the microwave" experiment. The reporter went on to say "this is the best way to taste a fresh Peep, unless of course you like them stale."

It's so nice to have one's preference for stale Peeps justified. :) *munches on a stale Peep*

mmmmmm... Peeps. (My family has an embargo on those because my sister doesn't like to see them eaten. *tch*) They are sooooo yummy... Stale peeps are the best for some odd reason. ^^;;;;;

My sister heard that peeps take 7 years to make, because it takes that long for the marshmallow to hold their shape permanently. To which my dad replied, "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see."

*chuckles*

AIM? Of course, I'm always here. :) Actually I found out that some cell-phones can use AIM on them (web-based ones). Is that a good or bad thing? hmm...

>As long as I'm not involved.

Isn't that good, not to be involved in preparations, especially when there are too many chiefs and ongoing communication problems ? :)

>His poor wife gets no reinforcement that her ideas are valid too, and it makes me so mad.

Yuck... that does not sound like a good marriage at all... it's embarassing and sad to watch couples make fun of each other and try to put each other down in public. I guess it's very common but it's nasty when it's done.

:) Good to hear you had a good (and busy !) Easter and got to see some cousins again and talk to them. Meeting up with old friends is always good. :)

LOL ! Hideto, 7 years to make a marshmallow ? Now that'd be stale marshmallow indeed !

So the difference between a stale Peep and a fresh Peep is that the stale has a slightly hard surface ?

I don't like peeps anyway, but I'm thinking a 7-year-old peep would be VERY stale. *double yuck*

I bet it's yummy! :) (juuuust kidding.)

A fresh Peep is nice and soft all the way through. Stale Peeps are harder. It takes about a week for them to age properly.

Open or closer bag ?

[identity profile] fireceremony.livejournal.com 2002-04-01 09:22 am (UTC)(link)

"Open or closed ?" :) Don't you hate that you can't edit comments ?

Yes - either they're deleted or nothing. :)

Well... you open the box and let it sit out in the air. I've found that aging them under the bed is not particularly effective -open air is best.

Then, enjoy. :D

[identity profile] hidetomatsumoto.livejournal.com 2002-04-01 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you keep the peeps under the bed, then the dust bunnies will get them!

[identity profile] fireceremony.livejournal.com 2002-04-01 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, yuck or the dust mites falling down from the mattress. Don't place anything you want to eat beneath your bed.

Noted for the future. :) But when I was living alone, I had a veritable snack bar under the bed. (to be fair, I also vacuumed under the bed more often then than I do now.)

YES! I, too, am a fan of stale peeps. When they're fresh, they're just too soft....*gag* One of my labmates brought some peeps in today, and at the end of the day today, she was putting them in a ziploc. Crazy... they'd be perfect tomorrow if she just left them out.

Microwaving, eh? Sounds entertaining. I considered toasting some peeps today over my bunsen burner, but didn't have anything appropriate to spear them with. Lab stuff + food kind of freaks me out anyway, so maybe it's best. And with my luck, OSEH would pop in for a surprise inspection the second the peep got crispy.

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2002-04-02 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
They don't get crispy - they get HUGE! Try putting one in. You know you want to! :D

Yep - they have to be aged just right. Your poor labmate, unaware of the delights of a stale peep.
