Final Fantasy meme: Days 11/12

I already brought this up on Day 02, but the answer is the same: Final Fantasy X-2. As I've said before, it would probably have been a fine game standing on its own, but it was a sequel to a game that was sad and poignant, and it didn't make the leap well at all. I can understand wanting to bring out that Yuna got on with things after Tidus vanished, but she didn't have to turn into Spira's version of Britney Spears. I can't comment too much on the plot, because I got so annoyed with Pretty Pretty Princess Dress-Up Magic Go!!!!! that I stopped playing about halfway through.

Besides that, the game was just lazy. IIRC, one of the motivators behind making a sequel to FFX was that Square had taken a bath on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and desperately needed to make some quick money. The ending of FFX left the possibility wide open, and all they had to do was recycle the settings and the monsters, give Rikku even less to wear, and make Squall a girl with red eyes, and blammo here's a game now go buy it and play it. And we did, Square; we did, because who didn't want a happy ending after FFX? Sure, the game was a cosplayer's dream, because there were so many different outfits ([livejournal.com profile] lizzyhamham's amazing Trainer Yuna comes to mind) but there were so many different jobs and so many different options for each job that you'd have to grind ad nauseam to get them all.

There were so many discordant notes. Carnival games in the Calm Lands? Guided tours of the Zanarkand ruins? Isn't that sort of like holding a circus in Flanders Fields or Ground Zero, to make a bad analogy? And since when is Yuna the Matchmaker and Concert-Promoter Extraordinaire of Spira? "I know how we'll fix this! We'll have everyone hold hands and sing Kumbaya!" I don't know. The whole thing pushed all my "this is very silly" buttons and I sold it on eBay, the end.

I don't think I've played any of them all the way through more than once. I spent over 100 hours on FFT, and that is shameful in and of itself. Now, I barely have time to squeak in a couple minutes of Dissidia here and there.

I love that everyone seems to have much the same opinion on FFX-2 (and yet, as you said yourself, we all went out and bought it, didn't we? Oh Square, you could sell us dead dogs with the FF logo stamped on them and we'd still flock out and buy them... *facepalm*)

Still, hopefully you made at least a little money back by getting rid of it on eBay! That's good thinking! ^____^

I don't think I've seen an answer for this question other than X-2, at least among the people who played it (obviously.)

Speaking of random crap we'll buy with the Square logo on it, I'm also deeply ashamed of myself for buying a Potion (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Potion_(Energy_Drink)). A fool and her money are soon parted.

Well you know how I reacted to FFX2's 100% completion system on [livejournal.com profile] xi_feng's journal. Ugh... And what it did to everyone's characterisation! And as you so illustrated, the horrific shift in tone from bittersweet and mature to this unfeeling fluff fest was just a slap in the face.

I love Tidus but...I really don't want to consider this game canon... Which is the lesser of two evils I wonder?

My solution was to watch the best ending video on YouTube and then disregard how they got from A to B. Thank goodness for internets. Back in my day, you had to play through the whole game if you wanted to see the ending! Now, you can skip to the good bits and spare yourself the rest of a painful experience.
