Oh barf

Popular baby names of 2009

Call it the “Twilight” effect: Names from Stephenie Meyer’s series of vampire novels and their hit film spin-offs sank their teeth into the list of most popular baby names this year, with Jacob and Isabella (the long form of Bella, Meyer’s heroine) topping the respective lists for boys and girls, and Cullen rising faster than any other boy’s name.

To be fair, Isabella and Jacob were popular LONG before the books came out. (I think this is Jacob's eleventh year at number 1.) And Edward is a perfectly fine name. But Cullen? CULLEN? I'm just glad that there's no sudden rush to naming little girls "Renesme".

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but I think the article is arguing that Twilight gave Isabella and Jacob an extra bump. "Cullen" is just pathetic.

Why, aren't you going to be using one of those lovely names? Hee!

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
We're going with family names. Egbert Horace! :)

Name your child "Sparkle von Vampyre" if it is a boy.

Or "Terrible Halfvampire Demon Baby" if it is a girl.

One of my coworkers is fostering a girl named "Armani." Isn't that sad?

Great comment, [livejournal.com profile] sideburnpower!

I am reminded of this classic post from The Misanthropic Bitch:

Bad Baby Names

Also, as others have indicated, much icon love!

[identity profile] morgi.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Baby's Named a Bad, Bad, Thing

Though, as someone who thinks "Wednesday" might actually be a perfectly acceptable girl's name, I probably shouldn't talk.

(Your icon is the reason that movie's in our queue. Well, that and Geena Davis.)

Thank you for the "Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing" link. I have laughed for hours!

It's one of the sites I go to when I want to laugh until I'm in tears. :)

Excuse me while I LMAO at your icon. Tom Hanks (I'm assuming that's him?) has the perfect GTFO expression!

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, yes, that's Tom Hanks in "A League of Their Own."

[identity profile] cjblackwing.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Dittoing the above icon compliment, and oh jeez *hurls*

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I didn't make the icon, so it's gankable.

[identity profile] cjblackwing.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had open icon slots, I would gank it before you could blink. :)

There was a spike in "Cohen" a few years ago, likely because of the kid on The OC. *eyeroll*
It's a fine line between honoring a hero or beloved book character (Holden or Guinevere or something) and slavishly following a pop culture trend. At least the names are nice, despite the purported association!

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The pop culture trend will inevitably end in a few years, and your kid is stuck with a dumb name like "Cullen" for the rest of his life. Eesh.

Better than all the poor kids named Sephiroth. There's no getting away from that kind of infamy.

Edit: FU, LJ, how dare you take away my Sephiroth icons!

Sadly, yes.
