President Obama

Poor guy flubbed his lines, he was so anxious. :)

ETA: Chief Justice Roberts messed up, not Pres. Obama

O HAY PREZ OBAMA, thanks for the part about restoring science to its rightful place (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for that sentiment) and also for the shout-out to nonbelievers.

Was I the only one who thought that poem was terrible?

My husband is down there on the Mall. Hope he gets out OK.

I was hoping someone would assassinate the author of that poem to be quite honest.

Hee. Tell us how you really feel!

I didn't even really hear the words. Her cadence was just awful. I enjoyed Rev. Lowry's (?) follow-up, though.

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed about the cadence. To my untrained ear, her poem sounded like random phrases pulled out of a hat and read the same way.

Pfft to you, "Inaugural Poet" was what started me crying. AMERICA CAN HAZ BE POETRY TIME NOW?

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I will allow that I am no English major, so perhaps I do not have the background necessary to enjoy the Inaugural Poet.

I started crying before the poem even started, so I don't think that's the problem!

He's there? Oh wow-I would LOVE to hear his account of the experience. I get a little wowed by the size of the crowd whenever they do the overhead shot of it spanning from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, because I remember how long it took Gina and I to walk from one to the other.

I can give you the mini-recap that I've heard so far:

Got up pre-dawn
Went to Mall
Watched sun rise
Flags on long sticks distributed
Freeze ass off for five hours

I would much, much rather listen to Aretha sing again than listen to the poem.

[identity profile] fadingembers.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that poem was pretty awful and her reading of it was nothing to write home about. I'm disappointed he got so close so many times in his speech to saying "With great power, comes great responsibility" and then never delivered.

[identity profile] fadingembers.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And by "he" I mean Obama. Not the poet who I knew was a woman.

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He got kinda Shakespearean at the end there, in addition to almost quoting Spider-Man.

Non-believers represent! Thanks, prez.

Was I the only one who thought that poem was terrible?
Emphatically no.

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So glad to hear I am not in the minority here.

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the restoring science thing won me over too :-) And the various religions mentioned, along with the non-believers, though that note is kind of lost when he refers to God several times elsewhere in his speech ::sigh::

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, to be honest, although Americans are somewhat less religious than they profess to be, they still expect their leader to embody the qualities that they themselves might not have. One of those qualities is faith in God, so Obama kinda has to mention God all the time.

I liked it. But I thought her delivery was sub par. I felt the low point was Rick Warren.

Rick Warren gave me the crawlies.

Agreed on the delivery.
