They're actually worse, in a way--the protagonist of Twilight is unlikeable and inactive from the very beginning, and her love interest is made up of equal parts Skeevy and Stalkery. Anita at least got to solve mysteries and kill things until the series went off the rails.
I try not look down on whatever trashy-fun brain candy teenagers are currently reading--god knows I now cringe at some of the stuff I used to adore--but the popularity of this series simultaneously worries and puzzles me.
I know adults who really love the books. I haven't read them but my kids snicker when they do. They say it's like eating Twinkies.... with sparkles. :P
OMG second the Sword of Truth series mishap. My friend practically beat me over the head with the first one (which was a good read, I admit) but then I decided to spend money on the other books. I think I got as far as Faith of the Fallen before I said fuck this.
And this is why I stay away from supernatural romance nowadays. It's all so trite. The only good vampire love story I read was Obsession by Lori Herter. It had something no other love story had at the time: a bittersweet ending!

It really is that bad. Have no idea why kids read this except the obvious, "teenagers have no taste and only want hawt smoochies in their fiction."
