brief cosplay bitchery

1. Naruto has BEEN DONE. No offense to all you wannabe Sakurae out there.

2. So has FMA.

3. Corollary to 2: if you're going to cosplay Lust, lose that 50 pounds first.

4. Same with Garnet.

5. Val's Cosplay Law ("It's all in the hair") still holds. Using one's own hair is great when you can swing it, but torturing your non-conforming hair into an anime style can look very, very silly.

Word. All around.

What brought this on?

Always! How do you think I can put together my Cosplay Awards?

I've seen the pics from Friday, but I haven't had a chance to look at any more than those. If the Vash is bad enough, I'll grab the photo. :D

Hehe, I have a law. I feel all important and Newton-like.

Also, word to everything. I want to cosplay Lust myself, but I probably never will. Unfortunately I'm too small in a certain area to pull off (or up, as it were) her dress.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2005-04-10 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If only her stupid dress had something to hide bra straps in, because you can do AMAZING things with the right bra but I've never seen a good push-up strapless.

To really get that lift, I think you'd need a lot of boning to lace in the chest and push up the boobs. An old-fashioned corset would probably do it. Of course, one of the reason Victorian ladies swooned all the time was that they couldn't breathe thanks to their corests.

With Naruto, at least there are a lot of choices that look different. Given that, it's amazing that it could be overdone so soon. Can you imagine the Naruto saturation when it hits domestic release? O_o

6. Don't brag about how you won't give away any of your secrets. It doesn't make you look skilled and knowledgeable. It makes you look like an asshole. I find it hilarious that communities of people (quilters, auto body repair enthusiasts, case modders, model airplane builders) who tend to produce professional-quality work (and often make money from it) will happily write howtos and tutorials and give random people tips on getting good results, but greenhorn kids* commission a prop and write some giggly bullshit about how they won't give away any of their finishing secrets. Ohnoes...primer and spray paint is such a big fucking mystery. Meanwhile, you can read carpentry message boards and get all sorts of advice that had been figured out long before Captain Hotshit even knew what cosplay was. I can understand not wanting to sit and write an A to Z tutorial of making a specific thing, but what the hell is wrong with sharing knowledge?

* The "kids" I'm referring to might not actually be children, but their attitude is definitely childish, so there ya go.

Sorry if that was a bit long, but it's been a hair across the crack of dawn for a while and it seemed to fit with the theme. =P

Seriously. It goes so far beyond cosplay, no doubt. People who are secure in their knowledge are very happy to share that knowledge with you. People who know how to do one or two things, and those things not all that well, will jealously guard their secrets.

All rants are welcome here. :)
