Because I'm thinking about Lovecraft

Michael Whelan is the most talented scifi/fantasy artist working today (IMHO). This link leads to a piece he did for the cover of a H. P. Lovecraft compendium.

Enjoy!

I recognize the Lovecraft one from my At the Mountains of Madness paperback.

A friend of mine gave me a card when I was in college, and I swear the art on the front of it was Whelan, though I didn't find it amongst those on the website you had linked to your page... it had a woman with blonde hair wearing a cloak, and she was looking up at the sky, maybe her arms were out... I can't remember. I'll dig through my stuff tonight, and see if it made the trip to Michigan.

:)
Great stuff!!

I recognize the covers (and there are some additional ones) that he made for a series of LC paperbacks.

I regard Whelan's covers to be some of the best I have seen for LCs books, they have a dreamlike and surreal look to them and that fits some of the stories.

The only other really good cover I can think of was one hand simple and drawn one done for Arkham House, one of LCs sucessors' publishing house (Robert Bloch I think) which keeps making special editions of his works.

BTW, did you ever read the Shadow of Innsmouth? I keep thinking about that one as my favorite.

Yeah - the red-on-gray-on-black really works for Lovecraft. The monster looking out of the window and the arranged skulls on spikes give me the crawlies.

I don't believe I've read that one yet. I'll have a look at it tonight. Thanks for the recommendation!

If there's a little symbol hidden in there somewhere that looks like an "M" laced with a "W," then it's him.

Hope to see the card! :)

I couldn't find it in my stuff, so it must be somewhere in a box in my parents' basement. I'll certainly dig around for it next time I go home. My sister still lives near my parents, so I may send her on a scouting mission for me. I'll scan it in so you can see it, if I find it!
